Grey's Peak - another 14er climbed!

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

I have been working out with the intention of climbing a mountain or two this year. Two years ago I made it to the summit of Quandry, but it was not pretty. I struggled a lot to make it to the top. This time I figured I was in much better shape and would be able to summit easily like all the young people who pass me on the trails. My husband set the alarm early (2:45!) and we got up and prepared for our climb. I threw a jar of my oatmeal and chia seed mix into the car planning to eat it for breakfast. It was one I had made several days earlier and I think my son had eaten part of it... when I opened the jar it hissed at me. So I did not eat it. I ended up not having much of anything before we began our assent.

I did very well cardio wise. I did not have a bounding pulse or any thing like that. Mostly was not out of breath either. I was just Sloooow and tired. It felt like I could barely move, but nothing really was bothering me. We started at the trail head around 5:30 am and reached the summit by 9:30. It was worth it, but I am wondering if this is truly the hobby for me. I get bored, tired, and irritated and I need a lot of encouragement to get to the top. Then coming down I feel like I will never see the car again. It is always around the next bend! But I did it. I made it to the top and back. I rolled my ankle a few times and that has been sore. My calves got super sore - even with all the time spent on the evil stairmaster!

I did it. And I will likely do another one some day. Maybe.

My husband loves to climb 14ers also - me, not so much. It's not the climb so much as the drop-offs that scare me. But I have to say that your post made me think I might join him one of these days. Maybe. We'll see. I agree with JLITT62 that life IS too short to be doing things you don't like, but how do you know you still don't like it if you don't try it again? So, good for you!

If you don't enjoy it, why do it? Seriously, life is too short. I'm impressed you could do it without breakfast, tho! And I'd be huffing & puffing due to altitude.
