Hi Spark Friends,
I haven't blogged in a while. But I'm excited about a new development in my husband's health journey. Some of you know he celebrated 1 year with no smoking on July 8th. Then something happened that on the surface seemed sad, but as often happens, turned out to be a plus.
I took pictures the last time we visited my granddaughter. I sent them to his computer and he gasped at one where he was on a couch playing with her. He said, "Is this what I really look like?" (This was the sad part)
Now, we all know that the question "Do I look fat in this?" is a question men don't like to answer, but I felt like I was in the same position. So I asked, "In what way do you mean?" This gave me some time to think. He didn't answer, so I asked, "Do you mean your weight?" He said, "Yeah!!!!!!!"
Gulp!!! I decided to be honest. It is no secret to him that he is at least 70 pounds overweight. So, I told him that I loved him and I thought he looked like a loving grandpa, but that the picture was accurate.
He said, "Will you help me? I am serious now!" (This is the positive part)
I of course told him I would, and asked him to define "help". He told me he wanted help with everything......food, nutrition, exercise......everything.
So Saturday we went to the grocery store and did some healthy shopping. To make a long story a bit shorter, we are now doing Nutrition 101. I'm focusing on small changes, success, and frequent positive feedback. We are working on portion control right now and beginning to look at his night time sweet tooth. He is shocked at the real size of portions. We are keeping a food journal on My Fitness Pal. (He doesn't want to invade my personal space on Sparkpeople, even though I've assured him it wouldn't.) I am having him identify his hunger levels and slow down during meals to identify satiation. We'll get more sophisticated as we go. This is certainly helping ME stay on track!! Isn't that always the way?
We have added walking together. He is already asking to walk every day and is going 1 1/2 miles.
This morning he said, "We need to throw out the two containers of ice cream in the freezer". I am glad I'm leaving those decisions up to him. Then I can be sure it is his motivation and not mine. We are going to make it a ceremony. LOL
I told him that all the movie stars have personal chefs and I will be his. He can feel like a star!!!!
On other news, I have a date for my cardiac ablation procedure. I'm so highly grateful that something will help my tachycardia. My quality of life will be much improved.
I am going in the day after my 60th birthday. My birthday is on Aug. 9th and I have the procedure on Aug. 10th. I only have to stay in the hospital 1 night unless there are complications. What a wonderful birthday gift!
So I am keeping my running and exercise schedule on track so I can be in the best possible heart health.
I have a number of friends going through major health challenges right now.........and they are all my age. One has brain cancer, one has breast cancer, one has just received a terminal diagnosis for a recurring cancer in her groin that has spread.
So I am a very blessed woman and I intend to honor my friends by staying healthy and helping my husband get healthier, too!
Our health is a blessing and each day is a gift. I so deeply and sincerely believe this.
The fact that we have all come to Spark to get healthy and fit in our own special way is a miracle. We are an amazing community of life giving support.
I must thank SparkGuy for the courage and the inspiration to begin this beautiful venture called Sparkpeople.
God Bless you all,
My Awesome Husband and Granddaughter.
P.S. This is not the picture that Sparked him. But I love this one.
