Sunday Musings

emoticon I think these are tomatoes. Just had to share that we picked the first tomatoes of the season yesterday and sliced a couple for our noon meal today. There is nothing like that first bite of fresh, home-grown tomato! We were in heaven. Sliced a larger one for tonight and had tomato sandwiches. My all time favorite sandwich is white bread with Miracle Whip and a big thick slice of tomato with a tiny bit of salt and pepper. Mmmm! But, in the interests of better eating practices we had whole wheat bread and light MW. Still very yummy.

Actually, I'd never heard of a tomato sandwich until I was married and Richard asked why I'd consider putting anything else with it when you have nice and tasty tomatoes. Now we patiently tend the garden waiting for those first few to be ready to eat.

emoticon emoticon For today's Sunday dinner we also had some of our newly dug onions and Yukon Gold potatoes in a roaster pan with a nice beef roast. The carrots came from the market. I still try to make a Sunday dinner most weeks. Another side we had was sliced cucumbers and onions marinated in a slightly sweet vinegar solution. Also very yummy! This is my favorite time of year for managing our meals, as the garden keeps us supplied with so many healthy and wonderful things. emoticon
I'll have to try to snap a few photos again to show you how things have grown even though we've had to water a lot to get it this way. I think we've decided that we'll limit the watering to the tomatoes and peppers now. It just costs too much to water as much as it needs.

Now if I could just get my hands on some great Iowa sweet corn, I'd really be in 7th heaven. The last I bought was $5 a dozen and the ears were tiny. So sad! emoticon

Wishing you all Happy Summer eating!

Sounds delicious. I've given up trying to grow anything in Texas. Just too hot and takes too much water which is expensive. Enjoy the veggies. I like a tomato sandwich as well.

Okay, Jeannie, if you're trying to make me hungry and jealous, you did it lol! My sis used to be the tomato sandwich eater. She'd cut that tomato about 1/2" thick, but she liked Hellman's. I love them with bacon (no lettuce) or ham or just plain. Okay, so it's time for dinner. Glad you enjoyed your dinner. You guys worked extra hard this year on it!
    Love you! Noel

Everything from your own garden is so fresh and much more tasty than the story bought ones. I love tomatoes and will occasionally make myself a lettuce and tomato sandwich with a little light mayo. Yukon golds are my favorites so I hope you save some for me--I can dream, can't I--LOL! I love onions and in fact I don't think I've ever had a fresh one just store bought and I'm sure next to home grown it leaves a lot to be desired. You're eating so healthy and there is no stopping you now as you're at the gate of Onederland. It must be a such a good feeling to see your garden growing and then eating the fruits of your hard work!

    Hugs,

    Jill
