The tale of two 5k's

I just realized I have completed 2 5k's and really have yet to blog about them. The first 5k I did was the Impact a Hero 5k near where I live. I have grown fond of jogging. This is something I never thought I would be fond of. Even when I lost 50 pounds a couple years ago I did it with no running whatsoever! I haven't really ran since high school where we had to in football. Although when I ran for football I wasn't bad I wasn't the fastest but wasn't the slowest either. However distance running had NEVER been a thing of mine. I used to laugh at the kids that ran cross country and think why would I run for fun! lol!

Fast forward to 6/2/2012 and here I am about to run my first 5k with my girlfriend. I was really nervous and pumped the morning of the run. Races start early I am NOT a morning person so getting up at 6am on a Saturday is way out of my comfort zone the same as running 3.1 miles at 7:30 am!

Given that I am not a morning person and have never been a runner I have enjoyed walking and jogging outside. In this weight loss journey it is one of the things that have helped me find peace. I love being in nature and I love having that time alone with myself to push me against myself. I have walked the distance of a 5k numerous times. A year earlier it took me near an hour to complete that distance and I would be worn out and sore. This day I set a bar that I can try to beat at future 5k's :)

We started the race near the back of the pack. We started out pretty quickly I think our first mile we avg a little under a 14 min mile by my phone gps run tracker I use. We walked a little bit as we crossed the half way point then we jogged again. I had trained for this one so it wasn't as bad as I thought. All in all I think we walked less than 5 minutes for our first and second respectively 5k that was not bad at all. We finished together in 47:05 a pace of 15:11 min per mile.

Now the second 5k... This one did not go as well as the first. I had a lot of travel trouble on the way to IL to see Korina. I had three flights to get to her and my last flight was cancelled at the last minute as they only had one pilot to fly the plane instead of the required two. I started my travel at 4pm I was supposed to arrive at midnight. Well I didn't make it there till 11 am the following day to an airport 240 miles from where I was originally supposed to be. Thursday night I wound up getting a total of 2.5 hours of sleep. I was able to get a little more Friday and Saturday maybe 10 hours total those two nights before our race. We had a cook out at Korina's uncles place Saturday before the race and were outside most of the day and it was over 100 degrees out. Saturday night the night before the race I would up getting really sick. My stomach was super upset and I felt really bad overall. But there was no way we weren't doing this race. So I made the executive decision I would do it and would just walk most of it. We were meeting our sparkbud Courtney there who was battling an injury and forced to walk as well. Korina's brother's girlfriend Jen was also going to walk it so I decided I would walk it with them. Korina was also suffering from a lack of sleep due to the hectic schedule but still wanted to jog as much as she could. She did really awesome and beat the time she had set on our first race of the year.

It was really awesome meeting Courtney and her friend Lynne and we walked together the first 2.6 miles or so. I was feeling ok and decided to push myself to jog the last half mile. Because the ladies kept such an awesome pace walking I was less than two minutes behind my previous time. I finished the race at 48:50. Even though I didn't beat my previous time I think with everything considered it was a good race.

I am hooked on the races. I want to do a 10k in October and another 5k before then. Also a warrior dash in November and hopefully my first half marathon next year!

    Your awesome! Ive just got on the 5K bandwagon and I have done 2 so far with another coming up this weekend! I did my first in July... the ColorMeRad run, they throw paint on you as run by... alot of fun, but a big mess!!! Last Saturday I did the Midnight Streak, it started at 11pm and it was awesome weather,... I finished in 43:10 walking/jogging and I felt amazing. This weekend coming up I will be doing the Glo-Run...and its fair to say...IM ADDICTED TO THIS THING!     This is such an awesome "introduction" to what it is like to participate in a 5K (for the uninitiated, of course.) There are pros and cons to every endeavor, but, this is one of those things that can really make you realize how far you've come on your journey!

    Awesome! I do not like running either but there is something about running a race that gets you so pumped- even when you know you are not going to be in "first place". It is kind of an addicting feeling! Great job!

    Congrats on completing your 5K's! I did a 5K walk in June for the Walmart walk for miracles - no running for me - it was way too hot, but I did the 5K in about an hour :)

    That is my friend! good for you! you are doing sooo goood!!!!! I understand you whan you say you used to run to train for football and laugh at kids who ran just to run. I was the same way! I ran for Volleyball but never thought I'd like running just to run.
