The Start of a Journey

It all began when my company decided that the department I worked in was going to have annual physicals. I made an appointment with my doctor to get the bad news first, before hearing it from the Company doctor. I had that appointment with my doctor on March 1, 2012. My blood pressure was critically high, 220/120, and he told me that if I didn't do something now I was going to have a stroke in less than 3 years. By March 3rd I was in the ER with extreme stomach pains. Had a cat scan and found nothing unusual going on. Went back to my doctor on March 6th and had lost 6 pounds in 6 days, but he didn't know why my stomach was hurting. He thought it was Pancreantitus and put me on a liquid diet for 3 days, then I could start eating bland. Went back on March 13th still having stomach pains and had dropped 7 more pounds, for a total of 13 pounds. My doctor sent me for an ultra sound and an endoscopy. Both came back with nothing unusual. After 7 weeks of stomach pains the doctor finally agreed with me when I said again, "Maybe it is the blood pressure medicine". He changed by medicine 4 times and finally dropped it down to just 1 that didn't bother my stomach.
After going through all that I decided I am not putting the weight back on and started working on changing my eating habits and exercising. It took small changes over several months. At the end of April I began walking with a co-worker. I kept in touch with the company nurse to make sure I was on the right track. Weighing in and getting advise when I got stuck. By the end of May I had lost 22 pounds when I found Spark People on June 6th.
I instantly fell in love Spark People. I now had access to a food tracker and fitness tracker which was way easier to use than writing it down or just trying to remember what I had eaten or done and when. Besides losing weight my blood pressure has dropped to 110/77. Even though the journey is going slow I feel like I will reach my ultimate goal and be healthy for the first time in my life.
