Happy Independence Day! emoticon

This morning I ran in the Freedom 5k in Lima and in summary--it was HOT!!!

Training has been rough because of the heat and today was no exception. Heat index factor is 104 degrees today. The race was set to start at 9 a.m. and since we were sooo early at the last 5k we thought leaving later would be a good idea. It was not. We got a late start and actually pulled into the park at 8:50 a.m. and it was already 90 degrees. The girls were so excited because we decided last week they were going to run with me. We had practiced only once or twice for about 2.25 miles... not the full distance.

We pull in and get parked, Natalie, Jolene, and Paige went to find the restrooms and Brie and I headed to get the bibs. Up a hill and kind of lost in the sea of people, we found grandma and at this point it is 8:55 a.m.. She points us clear across the park to the registration table. Brie and I sprint and get to the table and they had everything packed up in the boxes already. We quickly got all 5 bibs and ran back to meet the rest of the group who were running towards us. After halfway back Jolene says they, started, it is too late and we aren't doing it. Natalie pipes up and says, I can't believe you are going to bail on us! So we decided to head to the start line anyways (probably 4-5 mins after they started!). The chip mats were already being pulled up and the girls both said, lets do it. So we did, without being timed, but we decided since we run would catch up to at least grandma.

We ran our little hearts out to catch up with the walkers and finally did. In fact, we kept running and running until we found Grandma in the pack of walkers!! We did walk once we reached grandma and stayed with her the rest of the way. We would run/walk as we could and the path was not shaded, in the streets, but at least it was fairly flat! We made sure to get the girls drinking at the water stations because of the heat and they did amazing! Natalie's favorite part was at mile 2, they had a fire truck spraying the people -so we got refreshed!

Our mile times being called out were mile 1: 17 mins, mile 2: 32 mins, mile 3: 49 mins. We are assuming those times are from the 9 a.m. start time. Considering the heat and being late, I am so proud of the girls. They didn't complain, they directed when to run and when to walk, and Natalie was just a running machine. In fact, Brie and I had to try to keep up with her and I told her to slow down and wait for us at one point because she was too far in front of me for comfort.

Overall, it was a good run. Learned lots of lessons and will most certainly do another one. Afterward, we found grandpa and Jolene and Paige at the finish line. Grandma even said we need to do another in September so I can beat Grandpa--lol. I so could have beat him too if we weren't late.

Here are some pictures of our morning:
