Race report Firecracker 5K

Wednesday, July 04, 2012

Today was the firecracker 5K race in town. My husband said he was sick and could not run so we gave his bib to our son who just returned from Kentucky and asked him to run with me. He said he was nervous, having been living at much lower elevation for 2 years and not running. Silly boy. He stayed with me, jumping over orange cones and basically acting like it was child's play as I huffed and puffed and tried to run. Near the end he said come on mom and took off. I was not ready to sprint yet - I was afraid I would die before the finish if I took off too soon! But when I did pick up the pace it felt good - I ran hard up the hill to the finish (little hill) and passed as many people as I could. I finished with an official time of 32:09. That is a personal best by over a minute! I felt good. I even wished I had pushed harder so I could have been under 32 minutes. Next time. I will keep trying to push my time. I had a great race. I felt great during the race and felt great after the race. I did have to tell myself several times that I can do this, that I have endurance, and I can keep going even when I feel like walking. I did walk three times for brief periods, and mostly it was mental. I am improving. I can do this. I will keep getting better.
Happy Independence day everyone! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I got to your page because you posted on mine (thanks), and I see you appear to be another Coloradoan :)

Looks like you're doing terrific, and being able to do the Boulder Bolder was quite an accomplishment. I've had knee and ankle surgery that prohibits me from running at all anymore (I do the elliptical) but my heart is with you. Good to know about another person from the front range -- especially one who's well on her way to hitting all her goals!
