10,000 Steps??

I know that the 10,000 steps we should take daily is somewhat of an arbitrary number, but none the less that is a number set that we should take daily. I decided I wanted to start tracking to see how many steps I was actually taking. Yesterday was my first full day of wearing a pedometer -- I only walked 6500 steps! I even did a 25 minute on demand walking video yesterday!! Today after taking several short walks and doing a 15 minute walking video, I am only at 4200. Granted I have spent a lot of time writing these last few days, but I am way off the 10,000 steps. Time to get more conscious of my daily life.

Do you track your steps? If so, how many steps do you average? Any tips on how to add in more steps into my day?

    I walk around the house whenever I'm on the phone. When I do laundry, I fold each piece and put it away before starting on the next piece. I've basically made a game out of getting 10,000 steps

    I wore a pedometer (in a holster on my shoe) that was really accurate until our puppy decided the "holster" was edible!!! Just ordered a FitBit, which has several other functions, including flights of stairs that I have now incorporated at work. While mostly sedentary at work, keeping track of steps has urged me to do the stairs at regular intervals and take laps around and back to my office, etc. I would average 4500 or so there and more when including treadmill and dog walks at home. We did hit 10000 when on our recent cruise and walking all over the ship and in port. Need to get that many on a daily basis and the pedometer encourages me, too!!

    I find I get closer to 6,000 / day unless it is a gym day or mowing day. Then I'm over 10,000 easily.

    I usually only get to 10K or more if I walk outside for at least an hour, or do a 5-mile Leslie workout. I love having a pedometer though. It really motivates me to get moving. I strive for a minimum of 5k steps per day. To get there I will often march in place or walk around while reading a book. That way I still get my precious reading time, and am improving my health at the same time. Pacing while talking on the phone is a nice boost too.

    I tried a cheap pedometer and it would reset itself everytime I went to the bathroom. So.... I got frustrated and quit using it. I am going to Austin this weekend and will try to find a dependable one.
    I really am shortchanging myself as I walk tons around the property taking care of things.
    So you're ahead of the game.

    I used to but never found an accurate pedometer. Many times it wasn't counting part of my steps! Now I just try to go by minutes or a set route where I know the distance. I also have a Map My Walk app on my phone. emoticon
