a more affectionate dog

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Stormy & I are on a weight loss mission and as an added bonus I've discovered that both of my dogs are happier and more affectionate. Stormy will come to me and place the flat of her skull against my chest as I sit on the floor, just so I can easily rub her ears. She actively searches me out now too. I always knew in the back of my mind that daily walks would be good for their health but I never put together that it was also good for their mental health. Now both pups want to spend their time with me instead of moping around the house getting fat and lazy.

After two weeks (as of tomorrow) I have noticed that they expect me to be ready for their walkie. I do try to vary the time so that they don't get stuck in a rut. In this hot humid Ohio weather we vary between very early morning walks or dusky dark walks to beat the heat.

As I type this both dogs have come in to "get some loving" and let me know they need to pee. I am not sure who is training who at the moment. So I guess I should get my exercise done and get them outside.

Good for you for recognizing the needs of your best friends! I am in my mid-50's (oh, no!) and have had dogs since I got a collie for my 7th birthday. They have always gone for 4 walks a day, and yes, I make the time even though I do work full time and have a family at home still to care for. They have all been amazing friends and deserved to have the best of everything, including me. ENJOY THEM AND THEY WILL ENJOY YOU ! emoticon

Nice post and great observation. Sometimes we forget dogs are not trophies and they have needs to. Enjoy your evening!
