A Special Father's Day Gift
Monday, June 18, 2012
OK, so it wasn't really Father's Day just yet and it wasn't really something I was given as a gift (though I got some cool shirts on Sunday) and this more about something I did than something I was given but hey, coming up with catchy titles for these things is not easy so please forgive me.
Last Saturday morning, for the first time in my life, I ran 5 miles. I have never run as far or as long as I did on Saturday. For me this was a pretty big deal.
Back in the day, 5 miles was the "magic number". For some reason it was the number that seperated the mortals from the athletes. You would hear people talking about the guy who ran 5 miles a day in hushed, reverential tones. For me, it seemed like 5 miles was from here to Hong Kong. It was like the sound barrier. I could never do it.
But I did it on Saturday.
I'm not gonna lie. It was a struggle. The last two miles I ran at a pace that could best be described as below "pathetic". As I increase my distance, the routes I run become more creative and this one in particular was all uphill the last two miles. Talk about a lactic acid bath. Later in the morning I took my daughter to her swimming lessons. I got in the car thinking "hey, I feel pretty good" but then we reached the pool and when I got off the car... Oh boy! I wished I was in my happy place (which apparently was in my bed resting). It took most of the day to get my legs back but I was so happy I didn't care. Besides, I feel great now and cannot wait for my run tomorrow. The run before that last one I did 3 miles. I felt completely in control. A far cry from March when I could barely run a mile and a half.
It still surprises me to no end how much I'm enjoying running. I know I have a very long way to go here but it seems like I'm really on my way.
