Hispanic And Fit?

Thursday, June 14, 2012

As a Dominican woman trying to take care of my body, get fit and live a healthy lifestyle it is extremely discouraging sometimes by the lack of fitness blogs I find that are run by women of color. I am not sure if it’s a matter of they don’t exist, I’m not finding them or they’re not trying to be found but I am constantly finding all these fitness blogs that have fit women who don’t look like me— in skin tone, in body shape, in facial features, in hair texture, etc. etc.

It reminds me of all the times when I was little and not present. Magazines, Films, Television shows never did and still very rarely do have girls who look like me, who I feel I can relate to. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Eva Mendes, Penélope Cruz, Eva Longoria, even Zoë Saldaña are in my book quite thin. Having a point of reference and some sort of female figure to use as motivation becomes extremely difficult in that respect.

It would be nice to see and learn from all these women of color who have experienced the ups and downs of losing weight. I know they’re out there— the women who have figured out how to fit rice and beans and flan and platanos into a healthy well-rounded diet.

So where are these pioneers I’m looking for?
