What WOULD RE-MOTIVATE ME?

Monday, June 11, 2012

I was visiting Spark Pages, commenting on pages and blogs when I ran across the question, "Does changing gyms help remotivate?" As I started to respond to the blog I found that I was essentially writing a blog in response to the question. As a result, I decided to abbreviate my response to my Spark Friend and transfer over to my own blog! (Hey, it is worth 3 Spark Points!!!)

I am not sure if changing gyms would successfully remotivate me...I do know that I have maintained my weight for 6 months. It took me a while to allow my psyche to catch up with my new level of overweight. I deliberately chose to 'maintain' and not stress it. I worked out less, tracked less, stayed on Spark for continued accountability. I did not want to gain back any weight. The lifestyle changes I made after joining Spark were sufficient to keep me in a 5# flux. I have just recently decided it was time to take off the last 25-30 pounds. I am back to tracking and easing in to additional exercise.

Prior to the hiatus I had been doing Zumba and Yoga back to back and found that it seriously aggravated my foot so I stopped. This was a major factor contributing to my taking a hiatus. I had also been jogging and walking 15 miles a week and it got to the point that if I went 5K or more my foot would really hurt. I could not afford to go to a doctor so I tried all the things I would need to do for a sprain or stress injury. After 6 months of frustration I finally went to the hospital and had x-rays taken. The diagnosis was a calcaneal bone spur. The doctor indicated not much could be done for it, so I decided I would just have to 'suck it up' for the time being.

In going to a yoga class the last couple weeks I realize that my flexibility and balance suffered during my hiatus...they weren't that good when I started SP but they had improved. It made me realize that it was an area of exercise that I had neglected and that I don't want to make that mistake again.

The GREAT news was that I had labs done at the same time as I did the x-ray and almost all my labs were in normal range. Cholesterol was slightly elevated but blood sugar was back in a normal range and out of the 'diabetes danger zone.'

I don't want to pay for a full time gym membership at this time. But I have decided to participate in some group classes. Starting next week I will be participating in a Boot Camp fitness class at my church. I will also continue practicing yoga if the class is available. The Boot Camp will meet two nights a week and will involve a lot of healthy living and accountability.

As one SparkFriend so eloquently puts it, I just need to Get Off My Butt. In the spirit of that admonition I have decided to attend a total toning class tomorrow and Thursday morning.

Here's hoping I will successfully ease back into body movement and strength training this week.

I will keep you posted.

I've been wearing a boot for the last two months and I can say I wish I was going to your type of boot camp.

Have fun and kick some fat for me!

The bootcamp sounds awesome!! What helps me when I get stuck & need re-motivation is actually using SP vids! I'll either randomly pick a couple (depending on length) or use ones that target certain things. Or when I'm cleaning, sometimes I'll take a little "dance" break by putting on a song I really like and doing body weight exercises to it at my own pace (squats, jumping jacks, push-ups off the counter, etc). Just keep your mind open and creative!

Hey Kells!!! Love you blog. Move at your own pace, you'll get it done.

The follow up to my post was.... absolutely nothing was wrong. All that plus a 100.00 medical bill to say...oh its nothing. Glad it was nothing, wish I didn't have the experience at all.

Great! I am planning to start exercising very soon! I get too bored in the gym and it is too hot here during the summer... Any advice on what to do?
