Thank you lungs, thank you heart, women of strength

Sunday, June 10, 2012

I went out this morning for "footwork" which has been walk / jog since Feb. Now, I'm in prep for a sprint triathlon 5K that's 6 weeks from today. No bike today, just feet. I walked my usual 4 min warmup, started the jog for 3 min. And I just kept jogging. Coaxed myself bit my bit, just make it to the corner, the retired Marine's house. My usual distance is 1.9 miles, so I did that, jogging the entire time. Amazing! My mantra jogging is usually: I am strong, I am fit, I am healthy, I am amazing. (Swimming my 3 strokes, I chant the strong, fit, healthy.) Today, I added: thank you lungs, thank you heart, thank you muscles, thank you digestive system. Yea, the other organ systems got fleeting thanks, but didn't fit the chant as well. And my mind drifted to where the inspiration for the farthest jogging so far came from. I am the 7th sister, so I've grown up with strong women role models. (That's not to say I don't know the weaknesses of all my sisters; I know their strengths reaching past their weaknesses.) My neice inspired me to sign up for the triathlon; she's jumping past goals in her own running program. I've found plenty of strong women role models here on SparkPeople too. Indygirl, who has inspired many of us, finished her 5K, in significant pain. Thought of that when my foot was achy (as someone blogged yesterday, suck it up and keep going.) Indygirl is now recovering from surgery. I'm sure she's dealing with plenty of pain, which brought to mind gratitude for what my own body can do. Thank you lungs, thank you heart, thank you muscles, thank you digestive system. Another inspiration: this week's blog how I ran 3 miles without stopping. I clung to the advice to just relax, steady pace, steady breathing. 3 miles in 48 minutes. I'll do the math for ya: 16 min miles! When you bike then jog, your legs feel like bricks. When you stop jogging after that much time for walking cool down, the same, "I can't tell what my legs are doing" feeling came on for a couple minutes. A week ago, I bought running shoes, telling the sales guy: I don't think I'll go beyond walk/jog for the tri 5K. Well, after today, I think I just might jog the 5K! Now, to do this after a 12 mile bike ride :)

Love your mantras... may "borrow" them. I've been using "just keep swimming"... ala Dorrie in Finding Nemo. emoticon emoticon emoticon
