Spark article Walk It Out dare

Our Voyager Summer Walk It Out team was assigned the following dare:

Read the Spark article "14 Ways to Add Variety to Your Walks", try 3 of them and post a blog about it.

The article's 14 Ways are under 7 headings.
Add an Incline (hills or treadmill)
Speed Walking (pump arms)
Just Add Water (in pool)
Change Your Stride (shorter fast or longer slow)
Take Your Dog (self explanatory)
Change Direction (walk laterally or backward)
Vary Your Program (duration, intensity, day)

We live in the flatlands so 'Adding an Incline' wasn't going to happen unless I went to the gym and used a treadmill.

Same thing with 'Walking in a Pool'. Unless I went to the gym no pool, no walking in water.

With a 24 hour time limit to complete the dare, suggestions of how to 'Vary my Program' will have to wait for later experimentation.

'Taking Your Dog' on a leash and proper 'Speed Walking' form are not mutually inclusive. And since exercising Sheila is one of the primary reasons I enjoy walking, she won out.

So I leashed up the dog and headed out. I made a concentrated effort to 'Change my Stride' length during our walk. It was interesting to feel that taking longer steps seems to engage different muscles.

I wasn't comfortable with 'Changing Direction' by walking backward or sideways along the neighborhood sidewalks but I did try it after I teturned to the privacy of my house. Walking laterally along my hallway reminded me of the old days of aerobics doing the grapevine.

    I though about walking backward on the treadmill....but I'm so clumsy it would be a disaster, even at the lowest speed!

    Sounds like you enjoyed yourself. Walking sideways..........sometimes I have trouble with a straight line. emoticon

    I walk sideways on the treadmill - at a slow speed. I wouldn't try it outside though.
