How I failed at Burpees

I'm 5'4 and 226 lbs. I tried to do burpees yesterday for the first time -- I started going to crossfit and I was assiged a.. well I call him my babysitter, to show me how to do the moves and down-scale the moves we can for my needs. When we got to burpees he said "Theres no way to downscale a burpee." Since I couldnt really do them, I ended up spending about 10 minutes just throwing myself on the floor, getting up and throwing myself face down again. In fairness to the kid (he was really nice, my babysitter. Totally not judgemental, super nice..) I dont think he knew anything to tell me that would make it easier. He didnt really explain that it was a squat, to a plank-push-up to a squat. He just sort of hopped all skinny and lithly - like a sprite, and said "do this". So while my half-frog babysitter hopped about in a near prancing fashion, I threw my body on the floor and started trying to find ways to protect my knees and face from getting full on smashed. Today my assignment to myself will be to find a way to modify burpees so that I can keep up with the rest of the group.

    BTW, the video you posted really helped!

    I have definitely "modified" the movements now to be something I CAN do. Its certainly more time consuming but its better then *throw self on floor* *get up* *throw self on floor* like a sack of flour. Ha!

    Burpees are a challenge for me as well. The whole change in altitude is really tough to do quickly. I do about 1 for every 4 on the DVDs I follow. I figure if I can do them slowly with good from I'll work up to doing them faster, just like walking.

    Sorry ur having trouble with the burpees.. I hate them LOL.. Ok probably cause I stink at doing them!! but dont give up hope! and if anything ask for a different trainer that actually HELPS you!! Good luck!

    Found it! It was part of our challenge in February. It has modifications. I still could not do them because of my knee and hip. Good luck!

    I am 5' 2" and 150 or so pounds - and guess what? I can not do them either! I remember seeing a modification though. It was part of a challenge on one of my teams. I will see if I can find it for you.
