Independence June Challenge

Monday, June 04, 2012

It's a month of independence from a structured workout at my community college pool. I am also liberating myself of the 'not a morning person' moniker.

First, the easy (to describe) challenge: wake up by 6 am M-F and go to bed by 10 pm M-F. The cost is $0.50. Each time meet I the sleep/wake goal, I'm rewarded with the amount. If I don't do it, I'm penalized the amount. The total penalty amount will be added to last month's and donated at the end of the year. The total on the line per week is $5.00

Now, the other part of June's challenge: At the beginning of the year I set out on a challenge to swim 100 miles by years end. I'm behind. In order to get caught up, I need to swim about 3 miles a week. It's not hard to swim a mile in an hour. Ideally, I would swim 3 times a week and get this done. However,I'm uncertain where I should swim this summer. There are a few masters swim programs that hold some appeal, but I've been swimming with a coach months and months and I want to try it on my own in June. I know that is a dangerous situation. It is much easier to skip a workout when I haven't paid in advance and there is no one to miss me. I know the chance I'm taking and I'm betting on ME. Plus I'm paying myself if I do it! I'm going to start slow and build up.

Week 1: go to the pool 1 time: cost $1.00
week 2: go to the pool 2 times: cost $1.00 each
week 3 & 4: go to the pool 3 times: cost $1.00 each.

Total on the line this month $29:
week 1: $6.00
week 2: $7.00
week 3: $8.00
week 4: $8.00

This challenge runs from the 3rd to the 30th.

Week 1 Swim Goal: go to lap swimming on Friday at 6:30am.
Accomplished! I also swam on M&W on the last week of my swim class. I also accomplished the waking and sleeping patterns of a morning person. I had a little trouble mid-week, but I managed. Also, I figured out that going to bed early on Friday night doesn't make sense. That day's goal has shifted to Sunday night.

Totals for Week 1

Week 2 Swim Goal: go to lap swimming on Monday at 6:30am & Friday 6:30am (Wed. is optional)

I did it; another week! I swam on Monday & Wednesday. I was too sore on Friday to go. Now, week three is a super challenge as week 2's pool is no longer available in the am. The alternate isn't available until week 4. AND I'm going out of town this weekend. Good luck to me.

Totals, so far:

Totals for Week 3

I didn't swim at all. My sore shoulder and hip and closed pools kept me away. The sleeping and waking is a part of my routine now. So, next week I plan to swim 3x: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Let's go!

Last week
I was still on the dl and didn't swim. Although I didn't enjoy waking and sleeping early, I did it! I had the motivation of making my husband breakfast. Now, because I make the rules and there were unforeseen circumstances that kept me from the pool, next month I plan to earn back those six dollars not swimming cost me. In any case I have 23 dollars in the reward jar, now!

Just wondering, have you gone this week yet?
My goal is to swim laps (2000 yds) both on Tue & Thur. On M-W-F I get to play in the water, in an aerobics class.

After I get used to laps again (now that my shoulder is better), I will build up the lap days since I want to join a masters team and compete again. But I'm not putting too much pressure, I want it to be fun!

I like the whole idea of either paying yourself or penalizing yourself. Here's hoping you come out way in the positive!
