Scripture: Proverbs 16:6 (NKJV)
In mercy and truth Atonement is provided for iniquity;
And by the fear of the LORD one departs from evil.

Observation: This proverb shows the way to atonement through being shown mercy and telling the truth. The principle here is very “New Testament” even though this verse appears in the Old Testament. The statement seems to foreshadow redemption through Christ, His death provided atonement for our iniquity. The second part, “by the fear of the Lord one departs from evil,” reminds me that when I have a respect and reverent fear of an individual, I will be more likely to do what he or she tells me to do, act like he or she requests that I act. I respond, not because I am afraid of them, but because I love them and desire to honor them by following their requests.

Application: Somehow I get caught in the mindset that there is no redemption for individuals in the Old Testament because Christ had not yet gone to the Cross. However, in this proverb, there is a way for atonement to occur for Old Testament saints: in mercy and truth. The same offer holds today; the difference is that Christ was offered as the Atonement for our iniquity, and His sacrifice was done “once for all for the forgiveness of my (our) sin.” The process is the same; the end result varies in that OT saints had to continually provide sacrifices for their iniquity, and NT saints are covered by the blood of Jesus. However, the behavior of both OT and NT saints is determined by our Love for the Father: the fear of the Lord. If I hold the Lord in reverence and have a healthy respect for Him, then I will depart from evil.

Prayer: Father, thank you for sending Your Son to die that I might live! Thank You, Jesus, for coming to live in me so that I can have eternal life and be victorious in the life that I am living now. Thank You for being with me, never leaving or forsaking me! Thank You for being my Friend, my Savior, and my Lord. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
