Getting better at running !

I've been run/walking for the past month. Today however I made it over a half a mile before walking for a few minutes and then back to running. I am a smoker and its more my breathing that stops me rather than ability to physically run. I know I need to quit but Im just not ready at this time to put them down feel as if I would be stressed and eat more. Hope I can stop by the end of this year. Now thats a goal Im worried about.
