Live animal trap story: LONG and CRAZY, lol!

Thursday, May 17, 2012

We had a CRAZY start to the day! About a week ago, we had a woodchuck in our backyard, and it had burrowed a hole under the shed. A lady from work lent me her "live animal trap." I asked what am I supposed to do with it when I catch it?!?! Her husband said to take it the country and release it, and that it would be fine. Our dog Monte was freaking out last night, wanting outside, barking (which he NEVER does!) Jon came in the bedroom about 5:45 and said "Great, you caught the thing, and it's huge! What are we supposed to do with it?!?!?" Then he said he didn't think it was a woodchuck, but a badger or something. I know that we had a woodchuck, because I saw it from the kitchen window one day! It was still kind of dark out and hard to see. We walked back toward it together (it's at the far back of our yard) and we were both freaking out. I saw these beady little eyes, and that made me freak out even more and start screaming. LOL. Turns out it was a raccoon- and it was MAD! It kept trying stick its claws through the cage, and kept hissing at us whenever we got near! We went inside and Google'd it to see what to do and what we were dealing with. They said that some have rabies and can be mean. I called Animal Control, but they said they only deal with pets! I found 2 phone numbers of companies that come and trap animals like this, but neither answered so I left a message. I even thought, "Maybe the guy who owns this cage will come and get it!" I also thought of calling my dad or brother, but my husband said NO WAY. Finally, one guy called back and said that since it wasn't the raccoon that was causing us problems, to go ahead and let it go. I told him that the thing is huge and mean, and that it kept hissing at us. He said it would be fine, to just open the cage and it would run out. I kept saying "What if it bites us?!?!" and he'd say it wouldn't. But then he said, "Well, I can't promise that it won't, especially over the phone, but you'll probably be ok." PROBABLY?!?!? Are you crazy?!?!?! I told him that I wasn't even sure how to open the dumb cage since I borrowed it and had only set it up once (actually, the owner had it all ready for me, so I didn't do anything!) He just said "Oh, good Lord!" and LAUGHED! He said he could come over and release it for me, but that it would cost $125. Are you serious?!?! I told him never mind, that I would figure out how to do it! He said to stick a stick in the side to release the door and it would come out. Well, we tried and tried without getting too close, since the thing was hissing and trying to claw at the cage! We had the latch pulled and we were trying to get it to back up through the doorway part to get out, but it just kept going toward the closed end hissing at us! I went back inside because it was taking too long. Finally, Jon got it to come out and it ran away! It was the weirdest thing! Then I called the lady who owns the trap and said I would be coming over to return it! LOL! I haven't seen the woodchuck in a week, so who knows whatever happened to that!

I've always thought raccoons were so cute (even though I know they're little rascals), but this story has made me rethink their cuteness. I told Sydney God gave them little masks around their eyes cause they're so naughty getting into things and stealing like little bandits. :) lol
