Spark People Family Challenge!

Friday, May 11, 2012

Today I signed up for the SparkPeople Healthy Family Makeover Challenge. I think we can do this, and it will be some much needed changes in the household.

Week 1:

Reduce Screen Time: I need this and so do my girls. Over the past year I spent a lot of time doing homework and writing papers, and while I did a great deal of it during the girl's nap time and bedtimes, being the only parent home for a year meant I had to make sacrifices. Either stay up really late to finish that homework up and wake up with less sleep, or set the girls in front of the TV for an hour while I finished up (I tried babysitters, and found they took up too much time because there was either a great deal of travel time when I went to their house, or it was too noisy and I'd have to leave the house if they stayed here...frustrating, lol). Anyway, we've gotten comfortable with our "screens," even my hubs has stopped working out in favor of playing mindless games on his computer. So, it's time to reduce the screen time and get active!

Hold a Family Meeting: This is going to be perfect for us since we like to communicate and we are teaching our girls to do the same. As a homeschooling family, we might make the family meeting a homeschooling activity to let the girls see some of the challenges and planning we do, as well as participate in it so they are more excited about doing it.

Set Yourself Up for Success: I'm bad about getting organized, but it is something I've been working at slowly. Yesterday we even added a little organizer to the kitchen on the wall to help keep things less cluttered (I hope it helps!). I've never been a fan of meal planning for me (great for anyone else). It just doesn't fit well into my personality. I think for the next week I'm going to research meal planning techniques and find the one that works the best for me and our family. I have some ideas, so I'll try to keep you updated on what works. My husband last night talked about getting chore charts for the girls, and I think that is exactly what we're going to do today. I already have a chore chart created in Excel, I just need to update it and print it off, then figure out where to put it for easy access.

Learn How to Earn Your Trophy: This is the easiest step, yet the hardest, lol. I can learn all I want about how to do it, but actually earning it will be the tough part. I could cheat and just mark down everything as complete, but then what good will that be. This month we're going to do our best to take this challenge to heart and make our family healthy! Wish us luck!!

Good luck with your organization and menu planning... those are the things I'm tackling too! I trust we can both come out on the other end... not perfect, but successful!

While I'm working on becoming more organized and planning my next meal, I'll think of "Sunny" and send you energy and love.
