In Memory of Maurice and Steven...

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

When my daughter was three years old, my brother Steven gave her a book for her birthday. It was his favorite Maurice Sendak book entitled "Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More To Life" and he knew it was a little bit more than a children's book...as most of Maurice's books are. You see, he always believed that the best books could be read and deliver a message to the one reading no matter the age.

My brother passed away before my daughter's fourth birthday. When I returned home after his funeral, my little girl said she had something for me. She ran to her room and came back with a sheet of paper that she handed to me proudly. My husband had no idea what it was but said she had been working on it all day and it was a surprise for mommy.

In her newly learned printing, she copied this verse from the "Higglety Pigglety...":

As you probably noticed, I went away forever. I am very experienced now, and very famous. I am even a star. Every day I eat a mop, twice on Saturday. It is made of salami and that is my favorite. I get plenty to drink too, so don’t worry. I can’t tell you how to get to the Castle Yonder because I don’t know where it is. But if you ever come this way, look for me.”

I was crying by the time I finished it and she sat with me and kept patting me on the back. I finally asked her what made her pick this part of the book....it's in the back of the book afterall...and she just looked at me matter of factly and said that Uncle Steve told her to look there. I was puzzled...and asked her when he had told her. She said: "Last night in my dreams, Mommy."

So...now that Maurice and Steven are together, I just wanted to say how much they have both meant in my family's lives. We will miss them.

Wonders never cease to amaze me and miracles still happen. This of course was his way of letting you know everything was going to be okay. I would not be surprised if he visits your daughter man times. A child's eyes are more open than ours. Blessings. Donna

Oh Christine, That's beautiful! I know you've told me of some of the mystical connections between Steven & your daughter but, reading this brought tears. I wish I had known Steven.
