I tried a new food today - Bob's Red Mill Organic Buckwheat Creamy Hot Cereal
Saturday, May 05, 2012
I LOVE hot cereal, and saw this mentioned in someone's blog, so I thought I'd try it.
I followed the microwave directions, using 3/4 cup water to 1/4 cup cereal. The directions said to microwave for 3-5 minutes, but after 2 minutes the water was already almost all absorbed. So, I added another 1/4 cup of water, and nuked for the remaining 3 minutes. Then I added 86 grams of blueberries, a teaspoon of honey, and a 1/4 cup of unsweetened soy milk.
I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed with this product:
- It only has two grams of fiber per 1/4 cup (dry) serving (1/2 cup of rolled oats has 4).
- The flavor was very bland, almost tasteless. I had expected it to be strong tasting, like the buckwheat pancakes, buckwheat honey, and buckwheat soba noodles that I love so much.
On the plus side:
- It WAS very creamy (though it bordered on gluey)
- It wasn't offensive.
I won't buy it again, but I also won't waste the package I bought. I'll try adding some ground ginger and cinnamon to it the next time I make it to add some flavor
I also bought some kasha (toasted buckwheat groats) in the same shopping trip, inspired by Chef Meg's recipe here on Sparky. I'll report back on how I like those after I try them.
