Star Wars and Weight Loss

Friday, May 04, 2012

Anyone who knows me well will tell you that, of the many things that make me a loveable nerd, my passion for all things Star Wars is probably what pushes me into the edge of full-blown geekdom. Which I'm fine with, btw. So, in honor of Star Wars Day (May the 4th, like May the Force...get it?) I figured I'd take a handful of my favorite Star Wars quotes and flip them into inspirational quotes relative to weight loss and healthy lifestyles and meeting goals and what not. And I was happy to say I thought of quite a few, some obvious, some less. So here goes.

1.) Luke Skywalker: I can't believe it. Yoda: That is why you fail.
While Luke and Yoda may be discussing the ability to master the Force and float stuff through the air and play mind tricks on people, the problem us non-space people have is that we never believe that we can lose weight. We have convinced ourselves for so long that we aren't worth it, will always be heavy, will start next week.... but if we would just believe in the power that our bodies and minds posess, we too could do remarkable things.

2.) Master Yoda: Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.
The Dark Side, at least in my situation, is binge and emotional eating. After lots of therapy and counseling, I've learned that food is a band-aid to the hate and anger in my heart, probably from my parents abandoning me or a very sad relationship that I had. We fear changing, and a lot of times that fear is what keeps us from getting off the couch or reaching for our goals. Learning not to hate ourselves is challenging, but exercising and eating healthy can definitely have a positive impact on our own self image.

3.) Han Solo: Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.
I tell this to people all the time who tell me that they have "no motivation or inspiration." You can have all the motivation and inspiration in the world, but if you don't get your ass up off the sofa and and go for a run, well then you're just fooling yourself. Who isn't inspired to lose weight or look better or not die of a heart attack? Be the blaster.

4.) Darth Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
I say this to myself at least once a week, if not more. Why is it I can't just get up and go? Why do I continue to sneak snacks and treats when I know I shouldn't. It's that old Dark Side, beckoning me. And there's a little of it in all of us. The thing is, I've got to go Jedi and just pull the strength from within and get it done. No lack of faith here, but certainly a few leaps....

Have you got a Star Wars quote that gets you going in your weight loss effort? I'd love to hear it!

Until next time.....

(Note: all the quotes and photos and characters belong to Mr. George Lucas, not me, they are being used for entertainment value only and I couldn't possibly make money from it)

Another Star Wars fan here emoticon

My favourite quote is from Yoda:

'Do, or do not. There is no try".

Hmm, you've done so well applying these to the weight loss stuff!

The only thing I thought to add is:

“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”

As in, when your motivation wanes, call in the experts -- other Sparkers, nutritionists, trainers, etc. -- to get you back on track. Sometimes you have to ask for help in order to keep moving forward!

I love StarWars too! Anything sci-fi, I love it. If the storyline is good, even better.
