About three weeks ago I was doing really good. I was down to 188.4 lbs and my mileage on my running was up to about 22 - 23 miles. I was feeling great and headed to doing the Takoma Park 5k on May 6th and then the Marine Corps Historic Half marathon on May 20th. Then I got sick the first week of April and my left knee started bothering me. After I got better from being sick I tried to get back on track with my running but my knee kept bothering me. I backed off on my mileage but there was still something there. So, after a friend suggested it, I went to the orthopedist.
I just got back and he seems to feel that it's one of three possibilities: a slight meniscal tear, a little bit of arthritis, or a stress fracture. He wants me to go for an MRI on the knee to get a better picture since the x-rays don't seem to show anything in particular. He feels that in all three cases it's a situation of "may be" - and he emphasized that. What I do know is that I have been sleeping with a heating pad under my knee for the past few days and now every day I wake up and it feels great. In fact I can do deep knee bends now which I couldn't do a week ago. The doctor recommended that I not run until I've had the MRI done and we've had a chance to review it. He recommended that until then I should swim, do a stationary bike (very unappealing - I'd rather just do a real bike and go with that), or I could - if it doesn't bother my knee - do an elliptical. I plan on trying all three to ensure that I don't loose too much aerobic conditioning but I'm definitely bummed. I'm hoping that it's none of the three issues but rather just a muscle strain. I don't intend, however, to give up my running...I enjoy it too much, even when the weather is not cooperative.
I'm not ruling anything out but this little interruption seems to have knocked out my chance to participate in both the 5k and the half-marathon. Ok...I can live with that - I'll find other events to do.
