100 Days of Summer 2012 Challenge - Are You In?

Monday, April 23, 2012

emoticon"...Riding around town with all the windows down
Eight-track playing all your favorite sounds
The rhythm of the bongos fill the park
The street musicians trying' to get a start..." emoticon

I love summer. I love everything about it. I live for this time of year. For me, there are two seasons: summer, and wait-for-summer. Despite the 42 degree temperature hereabouts today (weird, I know) and the accumulating snow just a couple hours west of me, I'm psyched for the coming of another summer. Are you?

emoticon "...Stretched out on a blanket in the sand
Kids of all ages digging Disneyland
Rapping on the C.B. radio in your van
We'll give a big "ten four" to the trucking man..."

A short and non-inclusive list of what I like about summer:

1. Long daylight hours
2. Swimming, at the pool or beach
3. The ocean and everything about it
4. Fun outdoor activities
5. Grilling (this year, only Spark-compliant foods - you know me)
6. The absence of school (Alice Cooper still rings in my head! - at the tender age of 51)
7. The sun (I know its bad for me - still...)
8. The aroma of a freshly mowed lawn
9.; Drinking my morning coffee out on our deck
10. Memories of 8 amazing summers of my youth, spent on the Coast of Maine

And of course, because I am a creature of the commercialization generation, these four, in strict order (cue the music...):

Who does not remember that ad?!?! Whether you remember it or not, if you are at all like me, you will love the update in the following link. Does it not just scream "summer" at the very tops of its lungs?!

This will be the first summer of my Sparky reformation. I figured that someone else nuts about summer would have started and managed a group hereabouts. Guess what? not so much...

emoticon "...Young boys playing stick ball in the street
Fire hydrants help to beat the heat
Old man feeding pigeons in the square
Night-time finds young lovers walking there..." emoticon

So I am contemplating starting my own Sparky group dedicated to this topic. I'm picturing that members would post distinctly summery, Sparky activities in which they plan to partake, or have partaken. It can be a gathering place of the 225ish of you, or some subset, who have chosen to waste time reading the stuff I post in blogs. When summer is over (and only if I still have not learned all the Calculus needed to stop time dead in its tracks), we'll move on to emoticon Fall.

emoticon"...In Atlantic City or out in Malibu
Or any where between, I'm telling you
When you feel those balmy breezes on your face
Summer time is the best time any place..." emoticon

Within the group, we can have an overall weight-loss contest. Say (if we start on Preakness Saturday, a traditional kickoff day around here), summer is about 100 days long until Labor Day. Think each of us (whose goals so state) can lose (say) 20 lbs over that 100-day window? I think if we help and support one another, many of us can achieve this. That means doing the Sparky thing, even around those picnics, cookouts, crab feasts and ballgames. It means being good (calorie and exercise-wise), even when the kids are home, being bad.

So, here's the question --> Who is in? If I set up a Sparkgroup titled "100 Days of Summer 2012 Challenge" by May 1st, with 3 weeks or so to sign up, will you sign up and play? Responses here tell the tale. If I spend summer just doing the regular Sparky thing, so be it, but I think the hand-picked 225ish of you aspire to something more. What say you? Are you in?

emoticon"... 'Cause it's summer; Summer time is here
Yes it's summer; My time of year
Yes it's summer' My time of year..." emoticon

PS - Congrats to MaryAnn (I call her Ginger!...) who identified the lyrics of "Summer" by the group War, interspersed throughout this blog!

I totally remember that ad! Ha! Every summer without fail I'd hear the Spinners singing "I'll be Around" and it was my signal that school was starting in a few weeks. I noticed the days getting shorter and my anxiety would grow. I hated the feeling in my heart chakra and solar plexus, knowing that my summer days were coming to an end. Boy I wanted them to last.

BTW, I heard this song every year from 3rd grade on up through college. Freaky.

This is against what I want to do, therefore I know it's probably the right thing to do... (((Takes a deep, nervous breath)))

I don't know you, but I'd do it. Sounds like a groovy idea to me!

Ha-ha...SUMMER is really the only season, the others are just prep time and recovery from!

My husband thinks my brain got stuck in School Year Time mentality when I was a kid. He says I refer to "this year let's..." go or do something - when I should say this Summer. And I guess it got reinforced being a Teacher. My mental calendar is Summer oriented!

Now old and retired...everyday is Saturday...but still find that I get excited that it's almost Summer!

But I'm not doing well enough to join in any Challenge....Sorry. I am recommitting to staying on the healthy eating track, and vowing to move a bit EVERYday. Wish me Luck.

I wish you Strength to continue your journey! emoticon

Okay, I'm in. Out here, summer is a lot shorter than 100 days, so we treasure it a little bit more than most folks. :)

Bring on the salmon and crab!!! I'll grill 'em all and laugh as the pounds drop.

Count me in! I would love to join your challenge. I need to keep going so that I can meet my goal by September.
    2189 days ago
I love everything about summer too (well, maybe not the mosquitoes). I'm definitely a summer gal. Despite all the ice cream emoticon I consume in the summer, it's mostly balanced out by all the healthy grilled foods I eat too. I love grilling. And I love being outside too. I'm always more active in the summer too. That probably also balances out the ice cream too emoticon .

I love the idea of a challenge too. The SP January Jumpstart challenge was just what I needed to kick my butt into gear and the current spring 5% (weight loss) challenge helped me to break through a plateau and help me get to within 2 lbs of my goal weight.

So if you set up a challenge, I will definitely do it. I'm hoping to have reached my goal weight by the summer and if I have, I'd still like to join your challenge to help keep me accountable while I give the whole maintenance thing a try.

Count me in! I love summer and all that it entails and having an extra challenge to focus on will be helpful when it comes to dealing with all those "summer food" temptations!

I would be willing to join your challenge....I love to swim and it would get me back to tracking my food. And here is another Canadian summer song.....Summer of '69 by Bryan Adams.
It has been said that it is our unoffical anthem!

Onwards and upwards (or should I say 'downwards'!)

Good luck with the new team. We're heading to winter here - I'm jealous!! Don't really mind the colder season though. emoticon

What? You left out James Taylor's song...

    Summer's Here,
    I'm for that
Got my rubber ducky, got my hat,
got my cold beer, I'm just glad that's its here.
It's my favorite time of the year, and I'm glad that it's here.

Or something like that. Former roommate wrote out the lyrics for me. Infectious beat.

And Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry, Be Happy... don't recall if he specifically mentions Summer or not, but the rhythem and the fact that it came out in the summer of 1988 just before my ex and I split, and I kept the fall Holy Days in Puerto Rico which is like the Land Of Summer Year Around, and that was sort of my theme song that whole time, to keep my mind off the impending divorce...

And being a Florida Baby, all about the beach, taking long rides in the car with the "440 AC" on - different routes but SOMEHOW we always wound up at the A&W Rootbeer stand and got frosty mugs of freshly tapped A&W rootbeer.... AHHHHHH (better than a DrPepper any day and they came in those little bitty cute tiny 4 oz cups, perfect proportions, calorie wise. Were that those cups were still there!!).

So this last summer in Kansas.... 100+ degrees every day.... summer was fun, eh, not so much!! Plus we went to Oklahoma to spend some weeks here and there during the summer to try to deal with my in-law's estate and 100 was the cool at night, got up to nearly 120 most of the time averaging 117 in the day. That house didn't have no "440 AC", not even Central Air. It was a window unit here and there, and we might get it down to 85 at night!

    emoticon emoticon

But... this upcoming summer? who knows. California dreamin'.... could be really nice! I'll try to get my walking/waddling/running down before sunrise or after sunset, keep the sunburn down to a mild scald...

Let's ROLL WITH IT, BABY!!! (steve winwood, that is!!)...

oh and we're getting a soundtrack for the summer challenge, right???

I will definitely join in! I'm not terribly active in terms of typically summery things (fact: I can't swim) but I'm hoping to get a bike this summer, so I will be out there every day!

I think that a summer challenge is just what I need. Count me in!
    2190 days ago
A man after my own heart. I too LOVE summer. Yesterday was a hot and muggy (weird for these parts) HOT 96'. It's the first time in a longggggggg time that I don't have anyone living with me, so I can finally swim in my pool - which should help with the weight loss.

Bottom line - I have every intention of dropping all this weight ....this 20 lbs in 100 days is very doable and within sparky guidelines.

    2190 days ago
I would love the challenge - don't know if I could do 20 but I think I would be in for 10 to 15 anyway.

I'm in. I'd love a new challenge! Especially over the summer when it usually gets really hot and humid here in the Chicago area. (That's when I'll need the challenge in order to exercise even through the heat!)

    emoticon idea.

PS: I'm more of a Spring and Fall person. Love those seasons.

    Hey there Boss
You can count me in. As for the song, I know it's "Summer " and I think the group is War, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Anyways, my stint on the island has me all reved up about summer. I do long for it. But no coconuts, please! lol.
