Record Store Day!

Saturday, April 21, 2012

Yes, today was record store day. My boyfriend and I took our teenage rocker boys and two of their rocker friends and squashed together in the truck to hit one of the local independently owned record stores.

I purchased a huge David Bowie compilation full of his hit singles from 1968-1993, the debut album by Alabama Shakes (the lead singer has this amazing powerful blusey Janis Joplinesque voice that makes my hair stand on end), and a Putomayo world music compiation, "Acoustic Brazil" - acoustic bossa nova? Why, don't mind if I do!

The boys bought real vinyl, which amazes me. They think it's SO COOL. Last year I dragged them over to my mother's house and told them they could go through the large collection of albums my siblings and I left behind, and it was pretty funny to see my boys' faces grimace when they came across my old Culture Club and Duran Duran records. They skipped right by those. Luckily my brother had left behind some Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull and other old classic rock that they wanted, so now half of the records left at my mother's house are now in my basement near the turntable.

My younger stepson likes to go downstairs and play albums while he's lifting weights or running on the treadmill. The older one was down there lifting weights to Vanilla Fudge today. It blows my mind that they like bands that were old when I was their age. I guess it's only normal that there's a generation gap in musical taste between me and the kids, I just never guessed that they'd like bands that are from the generation BEFORE me!! Too funny.

I had an appointment with a nutritionist today. She thinks I'm on the right path with eating clean and liked my motto of "never eat a naked carb". However, all my carbs have been naked today. I am supposed to print out all my nutritional tracker info at the end of the week and bring it to her next week to see if there's anything that needs tweaking.

I've been doing my own food plan -- does anyone follow the SparkPeople official Spark diet? What is your experience with it? I'm pretty curious.

Gotta go, I have to go put on "Modern Love" and dance in my kitchen while cleaning up.

Record Store Day is an annual retail "event" -- although instituting it for my family is an AWESOME idea...maybe once every few months!

Mom & Pop record stores usually have special releases, or free swag, or live music and it's a nice boost for them, financially. We like to support Gerosa Records which has been in our area for 25 years - I used to buy records there when I was in high school and it's pretty cool that I can bring my high school boys there today. Many smaller shops have closed due to internet sales and iTunes.

Here's an article about year, go buy a record on Record Store Day, you might get some free swag and you'll definitely help boost your local economy (and add more music to your life!)
