Aging with Attitude

Saturday, April 14, 2012

I had dinner with the parents again tonight. Again, I am impressed with their attitudes on aging. They both have arthritis and joint issues. Tonight she told me they are signing up for a ballroom dancing class! They are both really enjoying and appreciating life at 75. They have friends who are ill, or who have lost their spouses, and I think this really causes them to appreciate each day they have together. I hope I can follow their example as I age. Some days I get so discouraged because I cannot do what I used to do. I need to just be happy to do what I can do everyday!

This is wonderful to hear!! I hope they have many, many healthy and active years together.
My mother is also 75 (soon to be 76) and is very active, walking 10k everyday as well as going to daily fitness classes and she has two artificial hips! She also puts in 12 hour gardening days in the spring prepping her large yard in spite of bad arthritis in her hands and does all the housework and cleaning and meal preparation. Unfortunately, her 80 (soon to be 81) year husband old sits around falling asleep in his various chairs all day or going out to coffee. He has an artificial hip and a bad ankle from having a motorcycle crushing it when he was younger. When they had a dog they would go for long walks on the off leash areas together, but when they lost the dog a year ago, they figured they were too old to look after another one :( They have no interest in dancing and don't share any common interests. I actually do not know what attracted them to each other (2nd marriage for both) but they have been together for 25 years!
I hope to be like my Mom when I reach her age, I have severe RA and five joint replacements soon to be six, but I keep as active as possible too, taking fitness classes, working out at home and going for walks as well. On my time off I stay with Mom and we go for long walks together -its my favorite time :)) She lives near beautiful river trails :)
