The Simple Diet Journal #16 -- Road Trips, Parties, and Aha! Moments

Monday, April 09, 2012

Feels like every day this weekend involved either a road trip, a party, or both! Tons of fun -- and had some "aha!" moments.

This is sooooo obvious, but I'll share it anyway. On Saturday, while enjoying a beautiful day in the city with one of my kids, and walking all over the place (my Striiv clocked in at 7 miles; I hadn't even realized we'd cover that much ground!) -- it occurred to me that my body didn't have a clue where it was. By that I mean -- yes, of course, I knew where I was -- but my metabolism and my cells, my muscle and yes, my fat, hadn't a clue. As far as all those working parts of me go, it was just another day -- so, whatever I decided to do healthwise (or not) would be processed in the way my physical body handles things -- calories, nutrients, exercise.

I think that sometimes we can have the mindset that our bodies know that we're going to a party or on vacation or on a road trip -- and maybe, just maybe, they'll give us an allowance for some extra cals or different (of the less than healthy sort) kinds of food -- when really, it's still the same body needing us to treat it right. These thoughts really helped me to stick more on plan, I think, than if I hadn't had them. Also, having had a chance to hear how others were prepping to stay on plan as much as possible (without beating ourselves up for small tastes along the way :-) -- really helped.

Another choice that really helped me this weekend -- deciding not to do my own baking on Sunday. I'm one of those cooks that likes to taste everything to make sure it's fine before serving to others, and I thought -- oh my, that'll end up being A LOT of sweets and carbs. So, I went to the bakery and bought breads and cookies -- and didn't have to double/triple dip at all! The kids seemed just as happy with the bakery bought items as they would have with all the home-baked ones -- and this not only saved me cals, it saved me hours of time. Gotta remember this for the future!

On a holiday weekend that celebrates victory over impossibility, deliverance and freedom, redemption, and hope, there were many special moments, but one other that relates to our journey here on Spark and on the Simple Diet . . .

While walking with great energy and feeling so good in the city -- sun shining, wind blowing lightly -- it was such a joy to feel strong, beautiful, confident, empowered! I found myself thinking of all of you and celebrating that:
We are Strong, Beautiful, Confident women -- able to reach our dreams and visions!

Truly, we are gaining so many new treasures while losing weight and accomplishing new goals.

Happy Day!

    A lovely post!

I always bring a fruit platter to my husband's family gatherings.
No involvement with going thru recipes that make me hungry, gathering ingredients that made me hungry, sampling, or having leftovers from something unhealthy.
Plus, of course, people enjoy it!

I really like the idea about your body not know where it's at "it's still the same body needing us to treat it right." I have to think about that ....puts a different spin on
events where we are tempted to say...............oh, what the heck.
