Mocha meets her first horse!!

Saturday, March 31, 2012

This is my dog Mocha, she is a rescue that I adopted last July and she is 14 months old. I have been around her since she was 3 days old. She loves to go for walks so I try to take her every day. We went for our walk this morning and I decided to go a different way. The way that we went this morning went by the York Fairgrounds for the Hanover Shoe Farms.

The Hanover Shoe Farms is one of the largest breeding farms for Standardbred Race Horses in North America. The farm itself is located right outside of town (my ex works for them). In town is their Fairgrounds where the yearlings are brought to get ready for sale. These yearlings have never been handled till they are brought here. They will also have some mares that they keep here till they put them in a pasture area and the riding horses that they use to train the yearlings.

As we were walking down the street I glanced down an alley and saw that there were two mares out in the field near the fence at the end of the alley. I decided to see how Mocha got along with them. As we started walking up the alley she saw them in the field. Her ears perked up and she looked up at me with her head cocked to the side. When we got to thefence one of the mares appeared interested in Mocha. She put her head down to snuffle through the fence at Mocha. Mocha was not sure what to make of the mare. Her size was intimidating, when the mare would back off Mocha would go up to the fence. She started to get a little closer but was still not sure. I didn't want to push the intro so I started to lead Mocha away. The mare followed us to the end of the fence where it could go no further. I think I wil take Mocha back that way again and see how she does. I want to keep introducing her to new people and situations.

It was just funny seeing the look on her face when the mare would get close. It was like she was asking me "What kind of big dog is that?"

To bad you didn't get a picture. I bet it would have been so cute. Alice wasn't to sure when she saw her first horse. Now she is a whiz with horses. You are right at taking Mocha back.

LOL! Sounds like it was soo cute! My Pomeranian used to love to play with horses. She thought she was a herding dog. They just looked at her like she was nuts. :)
