The Simple Diet Journal # 12 -- Never been and All In!
Thursday, March 22, 2012
Reading the Sports page in yesterday's paper, and while I usually only scan the headlines, I stopped and read an article about college basketball. After a comeback win, one of the young players said this:
"We've never been a quitting team. Our motto . . . never quit and give everything you've got."
Wow -- that's so encouraging, I thought.
Next I thought: That's right -- that's going to be my motto for my comeback victory! I'm going to never quit and give everything I've got to lose weight and get as healthy as I can be. ( I've even started to imagine that when I'm much older I want to make sure I surround myself with "young" seniors who like to stay active -- in body, mind and spirit.)
I also thought about his statement of never being a quitting team. I have never thought of myself as a quitter. In fact, in almost every area of my life, I have always been determined to finish, even when the mountains seemed pretty insurmountable.
So, I had to stop and think -- hmmm -- what about in the area of maintaining your health? What team have you been on for that in the last few years? I've never seen myself as being part of a quitting team before -- and while not quitting may not mean always winning -- it gets my heart and mind pumping and I'm inspired anew!
I also was reminded of the story I heard after the Super Bowl win by the New York Giants (sorry Pats fans). Don't know if you heard about the Giants's chaplain who invited his friend Gian-Paul Gonzalez, a high school teacher from NJ, to give a chapel message. It was a Christmas message, but Gonzalez used the poker term of "All in" to discuss our commitments, and passed out poker chips to the players (I think he's done this with his history students, too ;-).
I can so see the parallels between our lives here on our Spark Teams and on the Simple Diet with what Gonzalez told Yahoo! Sports:
"It really exemplifies that when individuals join together and totally commit themselves to a common goal amazing results are possible and people will take notice - which I think is exactly what they are doing against all the odds. They are looking 'All In.'"
This is so us! Let's make it so!
