Sparking at the 35th Annual Cincinnati AHA Heartwalk!

Monday, March 19, 2012

So as most of you know by now, we did NOT get the required 15 people on our team to get the Sparkpeople logo on the backs of our shirts this year, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of those who participated! I spent last week running around getting race packets to most of the participants, which gave me a chance to meet some WONDERFUL folks face to face! I didn't get any pictures of those running the earlier races, but a HUGE thank you and congrats should go out to REDEMILY, Michelle, Robin & Paula (I KNOW I got most folks' sparknames at SOME point, but durned if I can find those e-mails!)! (And seriously, poke me with your sparknames so we can "friend" each other and keep in touch please?)

As for me and my crew, we just focused on the Heartwalk this year, both because my daughter and I had walked 13.1 miles the day before during marathon training (blog to come), and I knew the others hadn't had much chance to train for anything more challenging. Of course, MOST of us did the 5K, but the younger son HAD to be an overachiever and do 10K (and run a bunch of it too - my trainer buddy from our gym apparently spotted him and said "That HAS to be Euphrates' son!", as she told the daughter and me at the gym tonight LOL).

Sparking Heartwalkers! From left to right (and again, I don't have everybody's sparknames, so POKE ME!) - Karen (1NEWJERSEYGIRL -whose husband Darrel didn't make it into the picture because he was off hunting down a bicycle pump for their stroller which had sprung a flat right before the walk), JoAnna (DTERMIND2LOVEME), behind her is Melissa (MBRADEN12), Connor (CAINFAELIN), Erin (KITTYWULF), Christopher (VERMITHRX), Portia (PORTIAELLE), Erika & ME!

My kids (with Erika and Melissa hiding behind Connor) as we were swallowed by the sea of red shirts waiting for the cannon to go off to start the walk (again, in order from left to right CAINFAELIN, DTERMIND2LOVEME, VERMITHRX & KITTYWULF)

The starting line! (FINALLY - it took nearly 10 minutes for us to inch our way there once the gun fired - by which time Erika and Melissa were well ahead of us)

CAINFAELIN & DTERMIND2LOVEME sporting last year's t-shirts so they could spread the SPARK! (Aren't they adorable? Just wait...)

VERMITHRX pulling ahead, and ALSO spreading the SPARK (well, when his hair wasn't in the way). :)

Check out the sea of red going up the ramp to Columbia Parkway in the distance - it was pretty impressive. :)

Walking with PORTIAELLE & KITTYWULF (who'd forgotten her hair-tie, thank goodness for Mom's hat, 'cause it was WARM at noon on Sunday!)

As we neared the finish, PORTIAELLE's daughter joined her while her husband took photos (they were adorable too). :)

Speaking of - FINISH LINE!

And now for the uber-adorable...CAINFAELIN apparently decided his lady had walked far enough for the day. *grins*

HORSIE! (Yeah, you can tell they're my kids)

Food at mom's ('cause they worked up an appetite...though I'm regretting the sodium in my Chinese takeout at the moment...sighs...I'm bouncing around 180 and only getting a pound or so below it before bouncing back up, just like I did 190 and I'm getting tired of it).

And there you have it! It was a GREAT day!!!!!

Oh, and though I KNOW I said that I was done organizing things, everyone we walked with expressed interest in starting up having local Spark Rallies again, because meeting up to do this with fellow Sparkpeople was such great fun. So stay tuned Cincinnati Sparkpeople team, I'll see what I can put together for April!

wish i could have come, however I was diagnosed with a rather large heel spur. Yay! No more 5k/10k etc. for a bit. I do think however, once I get more weight off that heel spur may not be such a pain

The walk was indeed awesome. Next year I'll try to join your roped into one of my own at work.

The weather! Yikes! Only in Cincinnati...last year we were in jackets and gloves.

Looks like you and your crew had a great day too!

It was great to meet everybody. I got pushed along in the sea of people at the starting line and just kept going. It was awesome to see so many supporting the AHA. My stepdaughter has a heart condition so this walk was important to me on many levels. This was my first charity walk and I'm totally inspired to take part in another walk this year.

I came within a hair of registering for the 15k. Instead, I rode in the afternoon. Looks like you all had fun.
