Guess what?!?! I used to HATE running and now I'm running a 5K!

I know I already posted a blog today but I really wanted to talk a bit about running. I started running in the fall. I bought some awesome running shoes and socks (who knew socks could make SUCH a difference?!?!?!) I was able to run about 4 miles without stopping and felt great! Winter came and I just couldn't motivate myself to run outside in the cold. The weather has drastically changed in the last few weeks and we are experiencing summer like conditions in March. I decided to find a 5K and start training for it. It was really the only thing that would motivate me to get started again. If I tell people I am running a 5K in May, I'm gonna do it!

So I found the 5K training plans on SparkPeople and have been following it the past week. I think it is flexible enough for my schedule and will help me get my time down. I didn't realize how hard it would be to start back up. I lost pretty much all my stamina (even though I have been working out in other ways) and I was pretty frustrated with myself during my first run. The plan told me to walk for a minute and then run for three, repeating seven times. I set my iPhone running app to alert me at every minute and found it very easy to keep track of when to walk and when to run. At the half way point (16 minutes) I was dead. I finished, and it ended up taking me 35 minutes total to get back to my car.

My second run was yesterday. It went much better but I think I paced myself a little better. I had gone 1.4 miles in 16 minutes and when I turned around and reached my car I was at exactly 32 minutes. It was nice that I was able to keep a steady pace throughout the entire run. I am really hoping to improve my stamina and hopefully improve my 5K time.

I will be running the Cinco de Mayo 5K here in Omaha. My brother will be running it with me and I am really excited. I have never done a race before and just can't wait!

Any tips for me? Do you guys run in rain or shine? What apps do you guys use? Do you listen to music as you run? So many questions!!

That's wonderful! I'm so proud of you! I am not allowed to run, so I have no tips for you except to say that I think this is fantastic!

I am so behind, but just plugging along, and I will eventually get caught up reading my friends' blogs. There is so much less stress with less "stuff" to do with my Sparking since I trimmed things down. I am not worrying about the points so much, and just tracking the necessary things and keeping up with blogs of my best SparkFriends. So much nicer! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thanks guys! I wear WrightSocks and they are incredible. I am very prone to blisters and I have NEVER gotten a blister wearing these socks. They are pretty pricey but worth every single penny!

I use the app iMapMyRun and I love it too! No problems every and it does everything I needed it too... and its free!!

I love running 5ks! I was supposed to do my 5th one this morning, but since I had last minute gallbladder surgery yesturday, I just went to get my shirt and watch the others run.

I find it VERY hard to run when it's super cold outside because it affects your breathing differently. I've got the App Endormono (sp) that's pretty good and I've used it some at home. I've got to see if I can get it on my iPod touch and use it at my races (esp my half-marathon next month).

I also make a special playlist of fast music that way I don't distract myself fast forwarding through songs during my run. :) Oh.. and I wouldn't eat TOO much the night before or morning of because it may lead you to have to go to the bathroom - lol. It's happened to me running at home.

I'm like you and haven't been a runner but I'm scheduled to run a 5K in Kansas City July 8th. I may have to check out that Cinco de Mayo 5K (I work every other weekend and that is my weekend off!!) to get me an "official" 5K race under my belt. I've just run two virtual 5K's so far. Good luck with your training. The weather has been perfect here.

I am so glad you're loving running! I love it too, although sometimes I hate it! I am doing a 5k tomorrow and I will be very happy if I can do it in under 32 minutes. When I run, I like to listen to music. I listen to all kinds, Lady Gaga, Pink, Black-Eyed Peas and so many more..mostly upbeat stuff. Sometimes I go without music, and just listen to the birds and frogs, or sometimes I listen to the radio. I think you're doing great. Just keep running and you'll get better and better. I'm in my last week of training next week for the 10k I am doing on the 31st and I've improved so much in that time because I've been working out 6 days per week and 3 of those are running. I do a short, but fast run of 2 miles once a week, a run of 3 miles where I sometimes do intervals, and a long slower run that is bumped up each week. My last one was 5.5 miles.

Awesome challenge! I did a 5k before; but as walker. Now that I am back on track, I have set a goal of running a 5k a month starting next month & ending with a 10k in November. I've been training on the treadmill and plan to move my runs outside next month.

There are a few articles about running your 5k on Sparkpeople.

No tips, but lots of admiration! You have transformed yourself, faced adversity, and are inspiration to me!

Way to go! I am not a runner.... yet. I will be running in a 5K in September. I plan to begin training after the July 4th holiday. I have no tips, obviously, but I am excited for you!
