Guess what?!?! I used to HATE running and now I'm running a 5K!

I know I already posted a blog today but I really wanted to talk a bit about running. I started running in the fall. I bought some awesome running shoes and socks (who knew socks could make SUCH a difference?!?!?!) I was able to run about 4 miles without stopping and felt great! Winter came and I just couldn't motivate myself to run outside in the cold. The weather has drastically changed in the last few weeks and we are experiencing summer like conditions in March. I decided to find a 5K and start training for it. It was really the only thing that would motivate me to get started again. If I tell people I am running a 5K in May, I'm gonna do it!
So I found the 5K training plans on SparkPeople and have been following it the past week. I think it is flexible enough for my schedule and will help me get my time down. I didn't realize how hard it would be to start back up. I lost pretty much all my stamina (even though I have been working out in other ways) and I was pretty frustrated with myself during my first run. The plan told me to walk for a minute and then run for three, repeating seven times. I set my iPhone running app to alert me at every minute and found it very easy to keep track of when to walk and when to run. At the half way point (16 minutes) I was dead. I finished, and it ended up taking me 35 minutes total to get back to my car.
My second run was yesterday. It went much better but I think I paced myself a little better. I had gone 1.4 miles in 16 minutes and when I turned around and reached my car I was at exactly 32 minutes. It was nice that I was able to keep a steady pace throughout the entire run. I am really hoping to improve my stamina and hopefully improve my 5K time.
I will be running the Cinco de Mayo 5K here in Omaha. My brother will be running it with me and I am really excited. I have never done a race before and just can't wait!
Any tips for me? Do you guys run in rain or shine? What apps do you guys use? Do you listen to music as you run? So many questions!!
