Got a Little Off Track...

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Saying I got a little off track in February is like saying that planes are sorta fast…it just doesn’t make sense. I kicked but fitness wise but never quite got on track with food but I was ok with that. February just kicked my butt both in fitness and in food. I took time off from work for my birthday and various other activities that lead to hardly any miles logged for my half marathon training and all kinds of yummy, tasty but not so healthy food being eaten too. I only logged about 24 miles for training…that’s with knowing that my half was coming up on March 11. Not smart.

March didn’t start off too great either. I got sick the week before my half and was very ill for 3 or 4 days and never did recover before my half. I was still sick and not able to eat normally so I had some fueling issues before the race. But I decided to give it a go anyway, after all I paid $60 to get into this thing and I’d trained pretty hard for it for months (excluding February). About mile 8 I realized that I should have stayed home, about mile 10 I was in real pain and had to do a lot of walking but I finished and I still beat my goal, which makes me think that I maybe set my goal too low for myself. My goal was to finish in 2 hours and 30 minutes or less. I crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 29 minutes and 30 seconds. Made it by 30 seconds.

My splits:
Mile 1: 10:51
Mile 2: 10:42
Mile 3: 10:30
Mile 4: 10:37
Mile 5: 10:41
Mile 6: 10:46
Mile 7: 11:05
Mile 8: 11:50
Mile 9: 11:40
Mile 10: 12:06
Mile 11: 12:12
Mile 12: 12:41
Mile 13: 12:15
Mile 13.1: 12:30

Not great and not what I trained for at least not after mile 8 anyway. You can really see where I just run out of get up and go. I fueled during the race but my stomach was still very sensitive from being ill and I wasn’t able to fuel the way I normally would have. But again, at least I finished.

So based on this less than stellar performance, I decided to sign up through my local Fleet Feet for a training team for another half that is coming up at the end of April, The American River Parkway ½ Marathon. It’s April 28 and the team meets twice a week for the next 6 weeks. We meet Wednesday’s for easy run and Sundays for long run. Last night was the first training session and I thought I did pretty well for my first run since last Sundays Half. I ran 4.85 miles in 50 minutes at a 10:17 pace. I’m pretty happy with that. The part I’m really looking forward to is the long runs. It will be nice to run with a group and not be by myself all the time when I’m running. It gets boring so this should be good. Maybe I’ll meet some cool people who like to run too…I hope.

So the next 6 weeks is training for The American River Parkway ½ Marathon and working on getting my food figured out. I need enough to be able to run and be properly fueled but not so much so I can lose a few pounds in this process also. I’m a bit chubby and I’d like to be leaner so I’m not pulling around as much weight.

Fingers crossed this all goes well…

emoticon getting out there and sticking all the way to the end. Hopefully you leave the tummy upset behind and are able to really kick it into gear training for the next race!
