Keeping life in perspective - priceless

Life comes at us FAST - an understatement. It just throws stuff at you everyday and how you deal with that, how you are set up to deal with that truly defines you.
I am writing this upon returning from the Pennsylvania State High School Swimming Championships - our 9th grade son competed in a relay with two 12th graders and an 11th grader. He was one of about 13 9th graders that qualified for the meet. And I am so amazed by these 4 boys and how they handled a truly disappointing showing.
If you do not know swimming - think track in the Olympics - the sprinters with the starting "blocks" that have electronic sensors...the ones that can detect the slightest false start....yep, the boys were DQ'ed. It was the 1st heat, of the 1st event and our 1st swimmer ( the backstroker) flinched on the start. They learned after the end of the race. All that work, Oct - March - 6 days a week 25 hours a week ..... DQ.
How did they react - all was fine! No hard feelings, no tears, no anger fits...just thrilled that they got to the meet at all. How many times have you seen the boy toss the bat into the dugout after striking out? How about the tears after taking 2nd place in a soccer tournament? Not these boys....they and the parents stayed to cheer on the only one of the group to make an individual event (the one that false started) and hail him later that night as he took 3rd place in the finals....3 in the STATE....in the 100 butterfly. AND to stay another night to watch him in the finals of the 100 backstroke...8 hours from now.
Perspective, poise and the ability to deal with the blows that life can give you - I am one proud mom!
