Test Run

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Now mind you, we owned a 42 foot motorhome that I drove for 3 years all over the US, and this little 22 foot motorhome is scaring me-maybe because I haven't been behind the wheel of a motorhome for almost 6 years. This one does not have all the bells and whistles, no exhaust brake, no auto levelers, no rear view camera. So I told DH before we head out Tues for our first camping trip, I wanted to take it out for a test run today since traffic isn't as heavy on Sunday!
After going to breakfast at Sweet Tomato with friends (did you ever eat salad for breakfast?? It isn't too bad) we came home and got Abbie and off we went for a drive and to fill up with gas. Of course, today it has been raining so I got to find out all about where the windshield and rear wipers were located! We didn't make a long trip, but went around the south side of town and came back down thru Main Street to give me practice making stops and turning and then stopped off to fill up with gas and then headed to the east side of town and went down to our Mall before making a U-turn and heading back home. Abbie settled right in on DH's lap and seemed to enjoy it so thinking she will not be a problem. I felt more confident by the time we arrived back home.
Our trip is just a little over 100 miles and mostly 2 lane highway on Tuesday so should do just fine. We are anxious to see how good the fuel mileage will be. Everyone is telling us we should get anywhere from 16-20 so this should give us a good idea of what to expect when we take off this summer.
I have started plotting our course for heading north this summer and now have to get with friends that we plan to travel with and see what they think. To get to the rally is probably going to take us at least 10 days with our stops and it is about 1500 miles. We already have figured we will stop at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Al. We have been to the Arch in St. Louis many times but they have never been there so thinking that is one stop we for sure need to make. We might leave even earlier to get in more sightseeing-we will have a couple of days to talk it over while we are out this week and if we leave sooner, we need to be getting our reservations for July 4! We have to be in Forest City, Ia by July 13!
All in all I think the test run went fine and I feel more confident about driving our little motorhome. Things like this never used to bother me but I find things make me more nervous every year-maybe because we haven't ventured very far from home for several years.

I didn't drive for 11 years when my kids were young. I was scared when I got behind the wheel again. It will come back to you.

Awesome! Sounds like you will have some great times in your new RV! I recommend the museum in Huntsville- we stopped by there a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.

Pat, congratulations on the test drive. I don't believe I have the courage to drive even a 22-footer. I'm confident that you will do well on the trip - you got your feet wet again today, and what is it they say? Once you (get) off the horse, just climb right back on and it will all come back to you. emoticon

I'm glad Abbie took the test drive like a duck to water. If she's comfortable, it will make the trip easier.

    Have a wonderful time.

emoticon on having the courage to tackle the open roads again. Yeah, six years can make a difference in our confidence as well as our physical abilities and stamina. Try to plan light days your first couple of days on the road, if you can. There's nothing like being exhausted and achy and knowing you still have to push on for another half hour or so.

Glad your little Abbie has taken to the vagabond lifestyle so well.
