I did Tai Chi!

Friday, March 09, 2012

I've been wanting to try this exercise since I first heard of it in 1996. I am, admittedly, a master procrastinator. It's taken me this long to do it! You know what? It really does live up to it's reputation. I'm uncoordinated, okay, and I pretty much have a hard time following along to fitness videos. Thus far, Coach Nicole's videos are the only ones I can keep up with. I finally decided to see if my local library had any sort of Tai Chi video. It was waiting for me on the shelf-the only one. It's actually an Australian film series by one Dr. Paul Lam. This DVD was titled Tai Chi for Arthritis. I figured that would be a good one for a beginner like me. There was a 10 minute introduction to Tai Chi, and the research that Dr. Lam did to make the video. He actually is a family physician, too, and he has suffered from arthritis. Anyway, he is very encouraging and thoroughly instructive. After the introduction, there are three parts: the Warm Up exercises led by another man, 6 basic exercises, 6 advanced exercises, and Qigong for arthritis. I learned that Tai Chi is actually a part of Qigong. Cool! I only did the warm up and first basic exercise. I also ended with the warm up as recommended. I felt very graceful and balanced while doing the exercises, which is a new feeling for me! It was also very relaxing. I'm definitely making this a part of my routine, especially since I discovered that I could actually track it as cardio emoticon
Now, for the review of my week. I actually did pretty good. I'm getting my weight back on track and am only one pound away from this month's goal. I just need to be good, which has been my downfall. You know-hooray I lost weight, I can eat whatever I want! It's not happening anymore, because I say so!! I did skip my workout Sunday and Monday, but I've stuck to my routine otherwise. I actually changed my strength training to the SparkPeople Balance Challenge. I've only done it once, but I could feel that I was working muscles I hadn't before. Also, really need to work on my balance. I'm tired of being so clumsy emoticon
I get new bruises all the time...As for staying within my calorie range, I slacked on tracking the first half of the week. I stayed within range, except for yesterday. Oh, well. Weigh-in is on Sunday, so I'll see what that stubborn scale has to say. Cross my fingers!
