Sad news, but I'm not letting it get me down...

Thursday, March 01, 2012

First, I want to thank all of you who have sent hugs and good wishes for my horse. Unfortunately, on Sunday evening, I had to make the most difficult decision any pet owner has to make, and that was to put him down. The medications were not working, his breathing became more and more labored and from Friday to Sunday, I think he easily lost 100 lbs. (Even the vet was shocked.) So, my friend (who was there when he was born) and I, were there with him till the end...

Here is his baby picture:

Here is a picture of us goofing around during a trail ride in Missouri:

He was a great horse and he taught me many lessons over the 25 years that I owned him. Most importantly, patience and anger management. If I ever did anything to him that he perceived as a violation of HIS "Horsey Rights", then it was a guarantee that he would get me back....usually that meant a launch off his back. But, other then those "few" incidents, he always made me laugh. From the first day I rode him and he gave me the most awful, rocking horse canter I ever rode (I laughed so hard I almost fell off) , to the days when he loved to run toward me at a full gallop in the outdoor arena, only to slide stop in front of me in the nick of time, and then just give me a gentle push with his nose....like, I could have knocked you down, but I chose not to.

My most cherished memory of Pryme Tyme was when we had the misfortune of running into an underground beehive. Somehow during that incident, I had managed to fall on the ground. When I looked up, I saw Pryme rearing up over me, ready to jump over me to the embankment on the other side. Due to the angle of the embankment, I knew he'd never make it and he'd fall on me.... In the very last second before he launched, he rolled his eye down to me and looked me straight in the eye....instead of jumping, he twisted his body around and slammed his body down next to me....never touched me. He actually chose to spare me rather then run and save himself. I always loved him, but after that day, words cannot describe how deep that love went. I will always miss him but I will always have my memories.... He truly was a great horse.....

He was beautiful!!! Inside and out!!! I know how hard the decision was, and I am crying as I write this. Just know that you did the right thing. Hang on to all those good memories, and especially the ones where he taught you all your lessons on being fair. The next time you see him, he will be strong and healthy with no aches and pains, he will call out a big whinney, run full speed up to you, stop just short of sliding into you, and give you that little nudge. You will ride the green fields together.
