Fraud Alert! My sons debit card was hacked!!

Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Who says "it will never happen to me" is absolutely WRONG!!

My son was checking his on-line checking account and was sent into panic mode...HIS ACCOUNT WAS HACKED!! Luckily he had checked it today and saw a charge for $634 to walmart.com. Immediately he contacted his bank and informed them of the fraud - the charge was pending - they said they could not do anything about it until it was no longer pending - WHAT THE HELP?! He was calling them to inform them of a fraudulent charge and they won't do anything?? ok, lets get this straight- I warn you and you do nothing?!

well.. anyhoo, he cancelled his card.

Next, he did something that astounded me,,, he actually listened to me and he contacted Walmart.com and explained what happened. GOOD NEWS! They were able to cancel the transaction (it turns out that it had not shipped yet) and we went to the police dept. to file a report. - not only to allow walmart to inform police where the order originated, but to also cover my sons "bucket"

When I asked him where he thought his information might have been compromised he told me he had made many on-line purchases in the past year or so and one of them was Sony - and other sites - whose entire data bases (which were not encrypted) had been hacked, compromising customer credit card information which in turn was released by the hackers to those with nefarious intentions.

So beware and be careful with your personal information....

* We are now checking our accounts daily

* We will be requesting new credit/debit cards w/new card numbers 1-2 times a year.**Note: there may be a fee for this, but a fee is better than hundreds of dollars stolen.

* We are shopping only on sites that protect our financial information by having encryption imbedded at check out.

***And if there is any site that we have used or are using that has been compromised or we feel our information has been compromised (mine was when a clerk watched me enter my pass-code on the credit card machine) we are contacting our bank or financial institution and requesting a NEW CARD!! and let them know why!!

-- guard your social security info

Above all else,,,protect yourself!!!

Be pro-active and keep YOUR money safe -- you have worked too hard for it!!

---- and remember ... IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU!!

    Hi Rosi,

It happened to me about 6 years ago in CA. I used my card at a gas station out there and had not checked my online account for 2 weeks and by the time I did 18 transactions had taken place for over $2,000 but I went to the bank and filled out forms and they gave me all my money back. Some of the purchases were made with a card and some over the phone and I asked how that could be when I still had my card and they said someone made a copy of my card.

Thank you for the warning to be careful with the info. That's good that it got straightened out and the charge cancelled. It's awful that you and your son had to go through this.

This wasn't caused by online banking, in fact if he did not have online banking he would not have caught it so fast and the thieves would have got away with it. or best case scenerio he would have had to wait months (or sometimes never) to have this cleared up.

So sad we have to spend so much time dealing with thieves.
