Taking stock - 4 years

Friday, January 20, 2012

Wow! I was just looking at the calendar and realized that I am coming up on my 4 year anniversary since I had the lapband put in! It doesn't seem possible that it has been so long, and at the same time it feels like a lifetime. My life has definitely undergone some major renovations in the last 4 years...

Most importantly I have successfully lost and maintained a 97.5 pound loss since the day I started the Medi-fast program prior to surgery! I have gone from a size 22-24 pants to size 10-12 depending on the style and store.

I am no longer insulin resistant, my cholesterol is good, my blood pressure is just about perfect... back aches are less prevalent at least... sleep apnea is still an issue but I come from a family of snorers and have snored since childhood, doubt that will ever go away. I have tons more energy and actually enjoy going for hikes and walks.

Personal life, I have met and fallen in love with, an amazing guy who loves me the way I am and who encourages me to be the best me that I can. We do so much together that I never would have tried 5 years ago - hiking, mining, amusement parks (and I even go on the rides!!), and just goofing around... we actually have FUN together!!

At work I was given a promotion 3 years ago that I had been passed over for in the past... getting this new position is at least in part due to my higher self-esteem that my weight loss brought me. My boss is constantly telling me how much happier and stonger I have become.

Definitely a lot of changes in my life since I started the journey with the lapband. Are there times that I wish I hadn't done it? Sometimes... but mostly just when I want to bite into a huge sandwich loaded with meat and cheese on chewy bread - I can't do that anymore without being full in 3 bites and it might make me sick because of how hard it is to chew properly. Will I live without having that sandwich? Of course! Would I have lived if I hadn't had my surgery? Probably, but I wouldn't have been as happy or as healthy. Would I have lost 97 pounds in the last 4 years without surgery? Probably not. A lifetime of yoyo dieting and even 2 years on Spark with only 10 pounds lost showed me that I needed more help than what I had in my life. Would I recommend lapband (or other forms of WLS) to others? Definitely, but only if you are truly committed to really making the changes that are needed. It isn't for everyone though. It isn't a quick fix or an easy road. It is a major life-change, and needs a lot of consideration and research.

4 years, a snap of the fingers and a lifetime, and a whole lot of change!
