Cleaning the Basement and Other Fun Things

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Whew! How do you track cleaning out the closet under the stairs of 40 years of "treasures"?
I found a note from my son who was 9 years old explaining to his Dad why he still loved him but would he please not kiss or hug him anymore in front of his friends. I remember that day - when my DH was leaving the house he gave me, my daughter , and tried to give my son a kiss. When he reached for him - my son put his hand out so my DH could shake it.

Then I found old letters from a friend when we were 14, a letter from someone that was my pen pal, another note from my younger sister, and one from my Mom. Fun to read.

Lots of old knick knacks that I had forgotten about, my old formal, DH's Air Force uniform, my son's snow suit from 1 year old. Lots of memories under the steps.

And I found a dress! A dress that I had worn after my daughter was born! Did I ever fit in that? Yep I remember it - so I put it where I could see it to give me inspiration for the next few weeks.
I guess my goal for today is to remember that I am that same person and I am still healthy and I worked hard then and can now. Remember who you are, remember what you mean to others, remember that if I want to be around to show these to my grandchildren then I will remember to be healthy!

After I threw out some old real junk, I packed things up, put them back under the steps, and the kids can get rid of the rest much later when I really won't care!!!
Sometimes having a mother that thinks keeping old "stuff" is not easy - so kids have fun.

My daughter already has said she is going to have a lot to do if anything ever happens to me. I have a lot of things saved in in cedar chest and in boxes in the closets. Some are from thier chid hood years and I even have things she gave me of here boys to save.

With my Mom passing away this last December we have gone through things and it is amazing what we find. It brings back lots of memories. Good luck to our children!

Keeping old stuff is like being a historian. You know the stories behind the objects & someday your kids will treasure those stories emoticon

It seems like we go through seasons of cleaning the old stuff-I think mine was this last summer. It was a bittersweet time as saying goodbye to some sentimental things was hard, but not all things stay that way, eventually they just turn into excess stuff! So good job going through yours, and may the memories stay sweet! And good luck to your kids and mine someday as they figure out what they want to keep!

good for you to tackle that project. I need to clean out the attic! We have moved a lot in the past, (hubby is retired military) but since we put down roots, I'm not doing a purge of our things every 2 to 3 years! It's fun to find those old things and relive the memories!
