I didn't rise as early as usual this morning, but still had enough time to do an hour walk with my poles before breakfast. When I was still in the States, I would always rise early to be at the pool at 5:30 am sharp to be sure to get a lap lane to swim before work. But that meant that I had to have everything ready the night before so that when my laps were done, I could shower and dress for work and then drive 45 min to get there.

I did Volksmarching then, but that was a weekend activity. I also did orienteering, which again was a weekend activity. I sometimes used a walking stick for those if it was uneven terrain, but walking with poles I first saw here in Japan. Their poles were very expensive here, so I bought some when I went home for the summer.

But this new activity is even more convenient and easy to do here since the soccer field is right outside my front door. My shower is right inside my apartment, and clothes don't need to be packed in my car. I walk, I come in and shower, I walk back out the front door across the soccer field to work. It would be difficult to find an excuse not to do it unless, of course, I was sick or something.

But swimming early is a regret here. The pool opens every day at 10, well after I need to be to work. It closes at 9 M-F and at 6:30 on SS. It is also a smaller pool, only 20M and only 4 ft. deep. But it works okay for laps which I add to my schedule on the nights I do not have Japanese class and on the weekends. Adding the pole walking is greatly increasing my calorie expenditure with only a slight adjustment to my schedule.

    Sounds like you are finding more ways to fit exercise into your busy schedule, and that is emoticon ! I've heard of pole walking, but don't know anyone who does it or have seen it done.
    I love exercising in the water and have done that quite a bit.

    way to go getting in those walks and the poles are such a great idea! I often use poles when I go snow shoeing for balance and extra cardio - so enjoy! and although you can't get in your swim in the morning it has to be refreshing to swim after work! so continue to take care of you - you are doing such a great job! you are a great inspiration to me! thanks for sharing!

    WTG, gotta love those poles! And those activities we can do without much preparation or planning are the greatest - for me anyway, it means fewer excuses!
