Tabata Workouts

My friend and I started tabata workouts a couple of weeks ago so when we saw a new posting at our YMCA regarding this workout, we were stoked!

We decided to give the class a try and today was the classes grand opening.

Tabatas are workouts that consist of 4 minutes doing intervals of 20 seconds on and then a 10 second break. You can chose whatever you like for the moves, you just have to work as hard as you possibly can. Go until failure!

We have been doing multiple 4 minute tabatas but this class was a full 30 minutes. WOW.....

The trainer had us moving!

We started the class with a 10 minute warm up. The warm up.... I was already huffing and puffing. She had us running in place, jumping jacks, high knees, and side lunges. Fast paced to get your heart pumping.

The class was broken down to circuits so I started at the jump ropes.

We started the 4 minutes of 8 intervals of jump ropes for 20 seconds on with only a 10 second break in between. After the 4 minutes were up, we would get a one minute break.

Now these breaks.... they went by way too fast. I was energized though so I jump roped as fast as I could possibly go. The sweat already dripping.

The second set of 4 minute tabatas were star jumps. Again, I was still energized so BRING IT ON!!!

Then our third set of 4 minute tabatas were mountain climbers with your feet on paper plates. OK.... this one burned bad and I found myself stopping a little too much. My legs were on fire. OUCH!

Fourth set of 4 minute tabatas were jumping side to side over a rope.

And finally the last set of the tabata was jump lunging. I was about ready to puke towards the end here. My face was beat red.... heart pumping...... but I felt GREAT!!! Such an awesome class and I can't wait to go again. We ended with some much needed stretching and plenty of water.

My friend and I decided that we wanted more torture so we stayed for the next class of core conditioning. A full 30 minutes of core work. I am going to pay for this tomorrow.......



In other news, last night I challenged one of the middle school wrestlers to see how long he could hold a plank. I held mine for 2 minutes so I was trying to see if he could beat my time. I started the stop watch and watched him as he looked like he was breezing through it. He went down at 1:04..... and then of course I leaned over to him and said, "I held mine for 2 minutes today"! He just looked at me and said, "How did you do that..... that hurts"!

I just had a big smile across my face. It felt so good to see this trim, lean 8th grader basically tell me that I am strong!

    Sounds like my favourite workouts, especially with those fast pace intervals and jumpings! So, what do you do for next day, another Tabata or full recovery day?

    What are star jumps? Or did you mean stair jumps? There are a group of 5 of us that have been doing tabata workouts for nearly 2 years - we all take turns making up the workout. We usually do 8 different exercises alternating between cardio and strength training. It is such a great workout - I hope you'll keep posting what you do in the class...gives me good ideas! (:

    I saw this blog title and had to check it out. I start teaching Tabata at the Y on Saturday. I am super nervous so this was really good feedback. My class will only be 30 min. 5 min warm-up, 4 tabatas, 5 min cool down.
