Day 8... and I got redirected... a little bit...

Sunday, January 08, 2012

Well like I said yesterday we were going to take this afternoon and do some yard work. We didn't have any lawn bags so we walked down to Dollar General to pick some up. We felt pretty good when we got back from our walk, so we jumped right into our back yard and started working. We raked most of the back yard and started trimming up some weeds and volunteer tree saplings. Then I totally squirreled... as we were loading some leaves into the bag I noticed how the leaves had already started to break down and there was an abundance of earth worms. Being back in an area where having a garden is much more of a reality than when we were in the desert one of my goals this year is to have a garden. I have already started picking out what I want to grow and where I want to put the plants and so on. I realized that if I just bagged up all the leaves and pine needles and such that I would just be throwing away money that I would have to spend later for garden enrichers to work into the soil when I go to plant. Sooooo I made my husband stop everything he was doing so I could jump on my handy dandy lap top and see what I had to do start composting. Well much to my husband's relief I did not have to send him to the store for any supplies :o) all we had to do to start was find a nice spot out of the way in our yard... luckily we have a good size yard and one corner is out of the way for us and all our surrounding neighbors. So now we threw ourselves into getting that corner of the yard ready we snipped back some tree limbs and started moving all the leaves to that corner of the yard, which was quite a task, in fact we didn't quite get the whole yard done before we ran out of day light. :o( But we did get about 85% of the leaves all raked up and moved to our *new* compost pile and will be able to get the rest of them throughout the week. After we came back in I of course again turned to my handy dandy lap top to do more research on what I have to do to compost and what can and can't be added from my kitchen scraps. Well it got a little late and my wonderful husband came to my rescue :oD he decided he was going to make dinner tonight, since his repertoire is very limited I had a choice of what was heat upable from the freezer, but we still ate at home so no matter I count that as a win in my book! :o)

So for day 8 we had frozen pizza and bread sticks.

Onward and upward we go, this week I need to figure out a menu and grocery list and restock our shelves because for once they are getting quite empty, but then that's a very good thing! :o)

I have been looking into composting too. We don't have trees to pick up after though so I am not sure how/when to start my pile. The city we live in offers classes on composting so I should look into it and get started. I would love to have a garden too.

Thanks! :o) I found a lot of information at and I know there are different sizes you can do depending your space available. I am so excited I can just taste all the fresh veggies this summer! :o)

Sounds like a fun project...I live in an apartment and grow some tomatoes. I'd love to compost, but have to check city ordinances and do some research...I run on a tight budget, but I think maybe you've inspired me to look into that on my next day off!! :-)

    Congratulations on all you accomplished!
