Many of you have asked questions via blog comments and it is so hard to get back to all of you, even though I read every single comment. So last month I asked if anyone had any topics they wanted me to talk about in a blog. One specific topic was plateaus. Have I ever plateaued? How did I get through them?? If they get any easier???
I have gone through 2 major plateaus in my 13 month weight loss journey. The first was about 4-5 months in and it lasted 3-4 weeks. At that point I was losing a consistent 2 pounds every single week. So when I all of a sudden stopped losing I started to panic. OMG what if my body is done?!?! But I haven't reached my goals!!! What ever am I going to do?!?!?!

I took that information to heart and prayed to bust through it. I made sure I was working out at a high intensity, checked to make sure I was tracking perfectly and then it dawned on me.
My plateau started right after my good friend's bachelorette party. I hadn't had a lick to drink (alcohol) since beginning my weight loss but that night I went a little crazy with the mixed drinks. I truly think that alcohol had something to do with the plateau. It took me a good 3-4 weeks to bust it but the satisfaction and confidence I gained from conquering it made it sooo worth it! I haven't had a drink since!
I actually just busted through my second plateau. It started right before Thanksgiving and held strong for the past SIX weeks! I have been eating well, working out with a high intensity but for some reason my body really, really loved 145. Which is great because that was my initial goal weight. BUT I changed my goal weight to 139 so I would have a bit more wiggle room. I decided to just keep eating right and working out and hopefully I would bust through the plateau. I weighed in last night (I just couldn't wait!) and my scale read 144.4! I was relieved to have busted the plateau. I then took my official weight this morning for weigh-in Friday and the scale read 142.8! I was beyond excited!
So my advice for plateaus would be to, first of all, be patient! Let your body do its thing and if you keep doing your thing (and you are being honest with yourself) you will get results! Secondly, make sure you are working out at a high intensity. As you get smaller, your body gets more efficient and doesn't use as many calories to do normal tasks. You need to intensify your workouts so you are still getting a good burn. Next, make sure you are accurately tracking your calories. This goes along with being honest with yourself. If you lick the brownie batter bowl it contains calories! It isn't free! If you do this over and over again it may lead to a decrease in weight loss! Lastly, make sure you are eating the right kinds of food and getting enough water. If you are eating a lot of processed, high salt, low nutrient foods, you may want to add some fresher foods to your diet to help you get through the plateau.
You can do it! You are a rock star and, if you keep it up, you will get results!!
