Reflecting on the last year

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

My goals for 2011 were:
1) run a sub 30 5k
2) run a sub 2:30 half
3) avoid injury
4) incorporate more ST
5)lose the last 20lbs
6) Begin a new career path

WOW. When I look back at the goals I set for my self it's quite depressing!
I did none of those things. Not one.

This is how my year went.
I PRed my marathon (although it wasn't the time I trained for).
I PRed my half marthon (getting closer to the 2:30 mark)
I PRed my 30k
I haven't even run a 5k in like a year, so no measurements there.
I lost my best friend but gained several best friends
I lost my running parter but gained the strength and courage to run and train long distance alone for the first time.
I gained 10lbs due to my thyroid issue so now I have 30lbs to go Vs. the 20lbs this day last year.
I did not start a new career path but got my GED (12 years late) I still feel very stuck in the career I am in. Banking seems to suck people in and they never get out. lol!

I guess I still have the same goals carried over to this year but I am going to add one more.
7) run a sub 5hr marathon

I think the goals that you have for this year are awesome... even if most are the same goals as last year. You are going to beat every single one of them! I know you are! You made progress toward them last year! Definite progress!! And just look at your accomplishments from 2011, see how much your experiences have grown and changed you...
You are READY this year... and you WILL do it. No doubts about that!

I wouldn't worry about your goals - they are landmarks which to mark the passing of time. Incorporate more concrete goals like add 10 minutes of ST 3 times a week - you can functional measure that - not just incorporate more ST. One step at a time. You will reach your goals if you keep working as hard as you have been. Don't expect them to come all at once...heck I have been wanting to run a sub 30 5K since 1999 - still haven't done it yet.

Sueann, I think you accomplished quite a bit! I prefer to not set goals because I think we end up doing more stuff than we give ourselves credit for. I think 2012 is going to be a GREAT year for you!

You have some major accomplishments there; especially considering the challenges you've faced. I doubt any of us ever reach all our goals in the time frame we set out. What is important is that we recognize what we can and can't do, we adjust, we continue to strive for better. Here's to a momentous 2012!

(PS - I know the feeling of losing count of how many guns in the house; I'm thrilled that we're finally down below 30 total. Most of ours are long guns though - only about 3-4 handguns.)

The reason we set goals is to have something to strive for--if we accomplished them all, what would we have to motivate us? And goals need to move with our changing lives.

Sounds like you accomplished a lot this year! You should be proud of what you've done and look forward to achieving even more in 2012!

It sounds like you did great. I'm sorry you lost your running partner. I can imagine how awful that must've been. Kudos to you for being able to get out there on your own. Good luck this year.
