new york and the new year

Monday, January 02, 2012

we had a glorious family trip to NY. stayed with an old friend whose daughter is kind of a big sister to mine (both being only children) and spent the holidays up in Hastings on Hudson with my sister and her husband.

saw lots of old friends that i don't keep in close enough touch with (10, actually, mostly but not all friends from when I worked at Legal Aid representing juveniles from 76-81. my, that was long ago).

spent quality time with my sister, including a 4.5-mile run on Christmas Day, a profitable shopping trip, a walk on the Highline, dinner on Xmas Eve, Xmas Day, our anniversary, another at their favorite local restaurant, plus the jazz evening described below).

visited museums: MOMA, the Met, the Frick. among other favorites, we saw 7 Vermeers (one of DH's very favorites), a spectacular Renaissance portrait exhibit at the Met that justified saying From Donatello to Bellini by borrowing Donatello's gilded head of San Rossore from Pisa, Matisse's Red Studio & Piano Lesson & Notre Dame (the Dance was unfortunately out on loan).

went to Lincoln Center 3 times: the Brandenbourg Concertos with the Lincoln Center Chamber Orchestra (Wonderful), Balanchine's Nutcracker (as DH said, how could Tchaikovsky and Balanchine together not be great?!), and Wes Anderson at Jazz@Lincoln Center (Dizzy's Club)(also Excellent).

bought fitness goodies: CWX running tights, a long-sleeve running shirt (and a short-sleeve one that says on the back, I may be slow but I'm lapping everyone still on the couch), 2 running bras that fit, 2 new pairs of running socks, Oesh running/walking shoes that i love (at least for walking), a great medium resistance band (with the right handles and a door handle), Coach Nicole's new video, the Galloways' running book for women, and (not sure this counts) Haruki Narukami's book about running (also running sweats & running shoes for DH who says he's going to take up running too).

bought clothes that fit: sweaters, bras, and a nice coat on sale. at the discounted Eileen Fisher Lab Store we went to, i was unfortunately slightly too large for the small pants, although way too small for the medium. will get a nice skirt & a nice pair of pants here when the sales start in the next 2 weeks.

ate wonderfully, albeit a bit too much. ok, i gained 2 kilos, but they'll come off soon, and we were eating celebratory meals with friends and family, all squeezed into 12 days ... most of my choices were relatively wise, and everything was delicious. no garbage calories. and a fair number of ideas acquired for healthy delicious meals.

mostly only my sister took pics, and mostly of us, not NY (she took and cropped my lovely new profile pic). the anniversary photos with me in my wedding dress have been posted already.

and now back to making 2012 even more wonderful than 2011. plans for controlling work will be the subject of an upcoming blog (if i can lose almost 70 lbs, i can control my work flow to prevent all-nighters, minimize stress, etc, right?). maybe a HM in my future (but maybe not).

Sounds like an awesome trip! Love the saying on your running shirt! emoticon
Good luck on the work flow and managing stress. That's one area I have yet to tackle. Hopefully I'll hear some helpful hints through your blogs in 2012! emoticon

Oh, wow...that is ALL so AWESOME! I know...when you work from home and "get" to coordinate your own work flow, it is a challenge. Been there, done that...I felt like I was ALWAYS working...or needed to be. My new job is with Macy's! Working in their Customer & Credit Services. I'm excited. And now, I want to go to NYC to visit the ultimate Macy's! Glad you had such an awesome trip and enjoyed so many things. I especially liked your list of running stuff purchased...loved the "I'm lapping everyone still on the couch"!! Keep up the good work! Thanks for your encouragement! Spark on! emoticon

That sounds like an incredible vacation! I'm glad you had such a good time and found so many goodies. I'm also glad to hear that your husband is considering taking up running. It will be fun for the two of you to have another thing in common.
Is there a specific half marathon that you're considering, or just toying with the general idea of doing one? I know you can do it if you decide that you want to.

What a packed trip! Sounds amazing. I love the t-shirt slogan and also Murakami's book about running. Recently also found Joyce Carol Oates writing about it:

“Running! If there's any activity happier, more exhilarating, more nourishing to the imagination, I can't think of what it might be. In running the mind flees with the body, the mysterious efflorescence of language seems to pulse in the brain, in rhythm with our feet and the swinging of our arms.”

Hope you take home lots of inspiration for a great 2012!
