I set a goal to run a race each month and I have started the New Year off with my first 5k. Whew! Signed up to run the Hangover Classic 5k which was today. Met a couple of firends yesterday and picked up our bibs and t-shirt, long sleeve - score!

This morning I picked up one of my friends and headed to the beach. We were meeting two other friends but we were early. Over a thousand people running either a 5k or a 10k and everyone starting at the same time. This was my biggest race yet.

I felt really good my past couple of training runs and I felt really good going into this race today.

Weather couldn't be better. The race was on beach front roads in Salisbury Massachusetts, never know what you are going to get in the winter in New England, omg, it was around 50 degrees, sunny and beautiful. I was worried I was over dressed when I was standing around at the start, but it was breezy and cool.

Okay, gun went off and we were off. Had to walk the first 20-30 seconds, but was able to start running by the time I reached the starting line. Although I didn't realize it for a little while, but I was right behind my friend who usually runs about a good 5 minutes faster than me, so I was really psyched when I realized I was right behind her at about a half mile into the race. I kept pace with her until a little over the 1 mile mark and then she started to pull ahead a little. I tried really hard to stay with her and I did keep her in my sites until about the half way point. I was really feeling good and was surprised when my half way song came on and I was well past the half way point, I started to think this was going to be a pretty good time for me. I had to pull off my fleece because I was too hot, I don't know if that slowed me down or not, but I felt better running with it off.

I usually seem to start to slow down in the second part of a race, but I really started to focus on not slowing down, tring to keep the pace that I had been running. There were quite a few turns in this race, but I came around a corner and realized the finish line was coming into site.

I saw the clock and it was showing 31:54, I was psyched, I picked up the pace and ran hard, came in with the clock saying 32:00! When I got my chip time, it was 31:30!! Woo Hoo, beat my PR by about 3 minutes - I was estatic!

My group of friends were there to greet me when I finished and then there was one friend who finished behind me, she also had a great time and it was her PR as well.

There was an optional plunge into the ocean and one of friends decided to plunge! OMG, she was awesome, dove right in! She planned ahead and had a change of clothes, I think if I had a change of clothes I would have done it too. We all agreed to take the plunge next year!

Next up, Frosty Knuckle in February, can't wait!!
