at 12.45 at night. After calling them about the problem at 10.30 in the morning. There was only a small puddle in the bathroom then. By the time they came it was overflowing into the kitchen and the hall. Because my apartment was the last one before the block in the pipe, the neighbors sewage was coming up in my bathroom. Thank God it was mostly washing machine water and no recognizable bits. Thank God that's also what it smelled like.
These apartments were build in the sixties, in a time when a lot of apartments were build. They had to be built fast, because of the shortage in cheap housing, after WW2. As a result the quality of the apartments is less than stellar. This whole neighborhood is going to be demolished in the next 5-10 years. When they do, the people living in these apartments will get first pick for another apartment and get their moving expenses payed. (read: will be put on top of the waiting list) I am not exactly in a hurry to move, though, as this is one of the cheapest apartments in Amsterdam. Moving means I will have to pay at least 50 % more than what I pay now. Since these mishaps only happen once every 2-3 years, I think I can live with it.
