My yoga & pilates experience....

Ya know I realize that yoga and pilates are VERY similar. But there is something about pilates that just does it for me. I look forward to the moment when I can depend on my core to roll up and lay back or to be able to stand and sit with control and no hand !!! I enjoy knowing and feeling my core muscle burn. I can't waits to see my flexibility increase, and my body begin to elongate...

I find yoga to be very stressful...... Something about the long breaths being the focal point of the movement irritates the crap out of me. During yoga I mostly notice that I'm uncomfortable because the positions are unobtainable and awkard....

Is it just me ???

    btw, when I wear my sweat belt during yoga, i be sweating like crazy cuz the crazy instructor has us holding poses for long periods of time while he tells sarcastic anedotes lol But I love the strentgh & flexibility I feel afterwards along a better posture. U can even add it to yr cardio mins, you'll surprised how many cals u burn, esp on a larger frame

    I agree w Val. Both r gr8 for diff reasons, however u do what u like, what works 4 u. I missed a few wks of both, so I need 2 get some sessions in more regularly, like once, 2x a wk... G'luck! emoticon

    as a runner, I find yoga to be extremely helpful for my breath control... because when I'm at the end of a running interval, I NEED to breathe steadily with long, controlled breaths in and out, or else I will not make it!

    A lot of the yoga poses are really hard... but the more you attempt to do them with good form (even if you can't quite do it yet), the more flexible your muscles will get and eventually you can do them....

    I also find yoga VERY relaxing... I don't really use it as a "workout" but more as a "de-stressing" tool. Pilates definitely is a combination of strength training, cardio, and stretching, so I do count it as a proper "workout"

    They are both beneficial in different ways!

    @ ONICAM right now I'm using dvd's I've gotten off of Amazon. With discipline it's pretty cool !!

    @ Lawgirl86 You are right !!!. I think that's what it is !!, lol Yoga (the class I took) is so meditative and relaxing. I can't relax.... the whole time I'm thinking I need to loose weight !! lol I don't have time for this. Where as with Pilates I can feel the muscles moving...

    Anywhoo Keep up the GREAT work ladies !!

    I like both of them, but I think pilates is better for your core than yoga--at least the type of yoga I'm doing. I find yoga to be really meditative and relaxing, so I can't agree with you there. But pilates feels likes more of a "real" workout. :)

    I have never done Pilates and do not even know where any are that I can get to. My yoga studio is closing its doors in January.
