A good 7 mile run and the runner's physique

Sunday, November 06, 2011

The last couple of weeks, my long runs have been brutal...the kind the feel like they're never going to end, and my pace has not been my best, which is discouraging. Yesterday I finally had a good run. I did 7 miles averaging a 9.30 pace. I was pretty consistent with this pace throughough the run as well; sometimes my splits are all over the place. I have discovered the only gel I really like is the Cliff gel in raspberry. I cannot drink Gatorade while running as it gives me cramps, same thing with Honey Stinger chews. So, I am done experiementing with fuel. I think that has been part of my problem as well.

I also had a decent tempo run on the treadmill. Treadmill running is a lot harder for me to keep a fast pace, which I find discouraging. So, I'm ignoring the numbers and just going by my rate of exertion for the different speeds. I know what my easy, mid, and hard paces are, and I just need to listen to what I feel like instead of stressing about the treadmill speeds. By changing my mentality, I was able to do 60 minutes on the treadmill. I enjoy outside so much better but sometimes I can only fit in the treadmill so my kids can go to the child daycare at the gym.

I have a 10K this Sunday. I think it will be my last of this year. It's been a good year for running. I never thought I would consistently be able to do long runs of between 7-10 miles every weekend. I am hoping to keep up a long run of at least 6 miles throughout the winter. I don't mind running in cold, but so many sidewalks around here don't get plowed well. I really feel like a half marathon is in my future for next year. I am glad it didn't happen this year, and that I could build my confidence with the 10Ks instead of pushing myself too far before I was ready.

The Halloween candy this week totally derailed my eating. Anyone else eat too many Reese's pb cups this week?

I also feel like I don't look like a runner. I am short and wide and probably carry 10 more pounds than I should. I am really trying not to let this bother me. Every year I lose a couple more pounds and I have maintined this weight 9 months. My clothes all fit; some are even getting lose. I am continuing weight training and am almost done with Stage 1. I LOVE feeling so much stronger. It's exciting.

Well, if you're still reading this, thank you. I am so inspired by other people's blogs about running and healthy eating.

I have that same "runner's physique," short and... solid, we'll say. ;) But you know, we're out there getting it done, so who cares!

Thanks everyone! The gels I like are called Clif Shot Energy Gels in Razz. I have found them at WalMart and Sports Authority. I am not coordinated to keep moving as I open and swallow them, and I don't know how to open them w/o getting my hands all sticky!

Good luck on the 10K! I think you look great and do look like a "runner". But then again, really, runners come in all shapes and sizes, Next year will be so exciting if you do a half! Oh, and the treadmill is the same for me, it's a lot harder than running outside for some reason. I did not eat too much candy this week, but between eating out, trip to the cider mill, made pumpkin bread today AND lasagna for dinner.....ya, not my average eating these past few weeks.

Good luck on the upcoming race! I also get inspired by other member's blogs and comments. I think I'm also going to try the Cliff energy gels as I've been starting to do longer runs once a week and think I need to add something. There are so many options its so hard to know what to try. You probably look much better than you think out there running!

Good luck for your 10k! Sounds like you're doing a great job, and the strength training will help with the physique (although you look loads better than you think!) I think I'm going to try the Cliff energy stuff, as I've heard a few people speak well about them.

Keep it up, and let us know how the 10k goes!
